Hi

I am new too, just now as a matter of fact. What took you to Japan? My daughter attended college there and sent me back photos of all the lovely hydrangea!!! I was so jealous. Our orig Cherry trees in Washington DC were a
gift from the Japanese to the American President (not sure which) post war as a sign of peace.

Herbyann, Prettylady and Catmint,
I'm teaching music at Christian Academy in Japan (caj.or.jp) and have been for 25 years; my anniversary of coming to Japan is Mar. 9!

Catmint, I love your name. Do you have cats? I have 4.

I'll let you know when my rhubarb seeds sprout. Trying them in modules with various kinds of soil. I planted a mikan (Mandarin orange) seed from an orange I was eating, and it's putting its little head up now. We're headed into spring already and I hope we don't have any more frosts, though March is a bit iffy. I think we're cooler than Calif. in the winter and more humid in the summer. In Centigrade we range from about -5 to about 40.

I began using this name years ago, mostly as my favorite password (oops!!) But I love salvia's too. Yes, I have two beautiful cats. One is nearly pure Russian Blue and the other a sort of mixed Russian. They are so blue-grey they look violet in the sun sometimes. If I ever have a female cat, I will call her Violet.

Welcome to all the newcomers!! This is a great place to sit back and relax, learn a little, teach a little and have a cuppa your favorite beverage. Make yourself at home!

Hi Cantate7! I love the sound of your garden!

I never ate persimmons until I lived in Japan.. What do you do with the persimmon harvest - can you make anything with persimmon? I've also heard a lot about loquat but have never seen them. Persimmons and loquat are both grown in back yards in Australia. How is your mikan tree?

I'm very excited, I've managed to grow shiso, mizuna, mibuna, komatsuna, mitsuba, nira, hakusai, soy bean and nashi pears here in Australia.

I had a kumquat bonsai with lots of miniature kumquats, but unfortunately I killed it. Has your kumquat's health improved? Has your crabapple bonsai fruited? My partner loves bonsai so I'm trying to grow some mame bonsai from seed for him to train as they grow. My dream would be to have a pomegranate bonsai with fruit! Nice to meet you!

Hi cantate,
A big welcome to GG from Lake Greenwood, SC. I have a friend that spent a week in Japan a few years back and she loved the gardens and architecture there.

I'm a gardening nut, my younger daughter calls me 'earthworm' because I'm usually on my knees with my hands in the soil.

Keep those hands dirty,
