roto tiller

I recently purchased an old, and I do mean old, roto tiller. Its data plate says it is made by Montgomery Wards, but they, like Sears, were a finance company that sold things.

I since have researched it back to a Gilson Brothers. Cira 1970.

I had to replace the tires and wheels because they had literality rotted off.

The motor works great! It is a Briggs and Stratten and I have not had a problem getting parts for it.

The transmission on the rotor tiller works great, if I could just figure out the belt paths! Sounds simple, there are only so many ways the belts can go, right! Wrong.

The tiller works off the crank shaft and the drive wheels work on a pulley on the cam shaft, 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft.

I think many of the pulleys have been changed out over the years and I can not get both the tiller and the drive wheels to work at the same time.

Does anyone know where I can get a manual or a parts list for the old Gilson?

Welcome to GG big red. It's hard to kill a Briggs and Stratten engine. Hope you can get everything up an running. Let us know how you get on. Maybe someone will come by soon who can help.

bigred,

You may have already found a manual for your cira 1970's Gilson Brother Tiller. I'm also in the process of getting a 1970's in service and found an owner's manual (pdf) for the same vintage tiller with belt and clutch diagram at:

http://rustytiller.com/manual.html

You can go to the Briggs and Stratton website to get a manual and parts list for the engine.

Have you located a place to buy parts for the tiller (not the engine)? I need to find the idler arm for the clutch assembly. I know that Toro bought Lawnboy who had bought Gilson Brothers in 1988 but haven't yet tried to get one from Toro.

Happy tilling!
