Hello, all. Always nice to meet more gardeners.

Just a short intro this time, ok?

I'm in rural Alberta (Zone 3a) and garden perennials, vegetables, annual flowers, fruit trees/shrubs, and bonsai. I'm just a bonsai-beginner (only 3-5 year old trees), and I'm slowly getting the feel for proper form. It helps being Buddhist.

My focus is on northern gardening, 'though I must admit I'm totally clueless about lawns and semi-clueless about water-gardening. I plan to put in a small cascading pond this summer, so I'll have to do a lot of reading first.

I discovered Heirloom tomatoes 2 years ago. I'm up to about 50 varieties (we're lucky to have a good 3 acres to vegetable garden, thanks to our farming cousins down the road). It's a very addictive habit, and it's got me interested in heirloom veg. seeds of all types. I don't know how far I'll go in that direction - there are just so MANY! - but I'm saving seed from all my current tomatoes and my rarer flowers. It's all a big lesson in a huge classroom, really....and there are decades before "graduation". :o

Other stuff? I'm actually pretty boring. Married for 16 years, a writer and stained-glass artist; "formally" trained in forensic osteology (but I gave that up after my last stint in Israel); born and raised in Italy, fluent in 3 languages and stumbling/learning through 7 others (just a hobby); kids include 4 cats, 2 dogs, 1 canary, 1 6-foot Iguana, and a Partridge in a Oear tree (I lie: it's a woodpecker in a Blue Spruce.). A tea-fanatic, 'though nowhere near a Tea Master. That's another hobby I would like to cultivate over time. Used to be I couldn't tell an Assam from a Macha, but I've come to enjoy and appreciate the world of tea very much. We're lucky to have a couple of excellent shops nearby (out here, "nearby" is anything less than a hour down the highway).

I'd like to get my Master Gardener certificate next year. It's very expensive here, so it's on the "we'll see" list.

Ugh, did I say "short?" Well....never trust a writer when she says she just wants to say a few words. You can't shut us up without duct-tape.

*grabs roll, tapes fingers together, and waves bye-for-now*

Namaste,

- Merricat
