I want to try growing onions from seed this year. Usually, I just get sets in the spring. I picked up a pack of Vidalia seeds. Should I start these inside & transplant later? Or direct sow the seed in the garden? That wouldn't be until at least April. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |

I start all larger onions inside and plant them out as transplants in the Spring. The only ones I direct sow are green onions. All my onions do very well this way. |

Thanks, Possum. I have good success with most Alliums. The only one I had trouble with was a lg white onion variety. They got some type of reddish-pink fungus. The yellow and red varieties in the same bed did not. |

im in zone 5 and start all my onions usually in the last 2 weeks of february Walla walla, big red hybrid and super star hybrid. Best method i have found is to start them in 3" peat pots and then transplant pot and all to the garden, make sure none of the pot or soil used to start them is exposed at transplant or it will act like wick and dry quickly killing ur plant. |

I've always used sets or plants, never trying to grow from seed. Sets do not produce the best onions, and plants are for some reason, difficult to find around my area. I decided to try growing from seed this year. I started seed of Granex Hybrid (Valdalia type) that germinated in nine days, (Why did I plant the whole pack? They don't keep all that well and I could never use them all before they rotted. Guess the neighbors will benefit). I'm not sure how well these short day onions will do in the Shenandoah Valley, but it is worth a try. |

I'm wondering how long on average it takes to grow onions from seed. I've got some in my garden that have been there since at least June/July last year! Prolly end up using the tops, middles and bottoms because it takes so long to get anything. ![]() Maybe I'm doing somethin' wrong? I stupidly planted some more from seed near my brassicas... yawn ![]() I'll have to wait til 07 to harvest those then!

what kind of onions? i usually add 8-10 weeks to the time is says on the back of the packet ex 120 to crop+70=190 about 6 1/2 months ![]() of course u can let them stay in the dirt longer to try and get bigger heads. Also when u transplant them to the dirt if the days are getting longer they will focus on steam/plant development if the days are getting shorter they will focus on the head growth
