I am new to growing rose bushes. I have two I planted in containers. I'm not sure how to prepare them for winter. I read that they had to freeze twice- which they did. After that, I brought them inside to my basement to spend the winter. I have pruned them and taken off the leaves. Should I water them occasionally? Or just leave them alone. Most of the reading I've done pertains to roses planted in the ground- not in containers. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! |

Hi..... I haven't tried keeping roses in pots but I think that common sense would say that you should keep them in a dark, cool place.... if your basement is cool that sounds fine. As far as watering is concerned, I would give them a little drink once a month or so but you really want them to rest till March or so. You didn't say where you live and I'm wondering why you are keeping them in pots... most roses are very hardy to zone 5 and many will even withstand colder zones than that if on good root stock. Had you thought about wrapping them up for the winter and leaving them outdoors in the shade where they will not get into a thawing/freezing cycle? Good luck with them... roses are such fun... let us know how they do. |
