I organize each album by theme. So I have a gardening album, a family album, an album of my son, an album of me, etc. Within each album, I organize it chronologically. So within my son's album, anything that takes place during the year that involves him goes in the album in chronological order. Other family and friends, family reunions, holiday get togethers, etc. go in the Family album. I also have a section in the Family album for our pets, because pets are people too. LOL

Organizing is much simpler if you first decide what will work for you. Then take all your pictures and separate them into appropriate piles. In my case the piles would be gardening, Jay (my son), me, Family, etc. After sorting, I put each pile of pictures into a big envelope or whatever they fit in and label the envelope with their category. Then I pick one category which will be one scrapbook. And I sort the pictures chronologically.

With my son's scrapbook, I divided the sections of the scrapbook into themes: Birthday, Puppy Love (for all the pics of him and his various puppies over the years), Christmas, school stuff, family portraits, etc. Each section will be put in an envelope or folder. And then I pick one section, like Birthdays, to work with. I would sort the birthday pictures into piles of 1st bday, 2nd bday, 3rd bday, etc. I put them in envelopes and back into the Birthdays folder. Then I start with 1st bday and figure out how I want to set up a page.

It's so much easier when you break the task down into small, manageable sections. It's pretty daunting to take a boxfull of pictures and try to begin. It can be overwhelming. But as you break the project down to into smaller and smaller categories, I think your creativity will begin to flow.

My little sister claims to be the "great organizer", always wanting to organize everyone's cabinets, drawers, and closets (DRIVES ME NUTS!!!! I Like my stuff where I put it! LOL). I tried to teach her scrapbooking and after just one hour, she threw in the towel. It completely overwhelmed the great organizer--maybe because it takes a bit more time than organizing the cabinet of over the sink? LOL

I think how you organize is up to you. There isn't a right a wrong way - it is all creative ! I put everything in a family album - one each year. I do it all in order, beginning with January. When my children were in school, they each had their own albums because I kept so much of their art work and writing. Three of my sons are grown with families of their own, and now the photos I receive from them are placed in the family album. I like a yearly family album because it is a window on our year. We can sit down and reminisce the holidays, the visitors, the birthdays, the garden, our pets and family.

I love to scrapbook. I started when i became pregnant with my son. I kept everything and then decided i needed soemthing special to do with it all - so scrapbooking became my call. I am behind in the times right now having just purchased a new home so i plan to get all my stuff organized and start on some new ones. My problem is - is that there is just way too much great items out their and it can be dangerous on my bank account. My problem is how to organize them. I don't know whether to do general albums like family, friends, trips etc. or to narrow it down to holiday scrapbooks where i add to it every year then just have specific albums for specific events or a year by year album??? any suggestions?

Penny, I scrapbook all of mine in photo ablums (using acid free supplies) because it's like what Butterfly Chaser said you can tell the story behind each picture and it makes and alblum look more interesting. Not to mention it is fun.

How many photos do you have? You don't put every photo in a scrapbook, do you? I ask because I have around 20 albums and each album has around 400 pictures in them. That's why I haven't scrapbooked any of them. Or do you just scrapbook a few photos from each occasion? Most stamping supplies are also acid free.

I am in the process of making my photo ablums like a scrapbook. I think it gives an umph to just a regular ol' photo ablum.

The thing about using true scrapbooking supplies and techniques is that they are acid free, protecting your pictures from the acid in traditional photo albums. So they'll last long, resist fading, cracking, etc.

What I like most about scrapping is that instead of just displaying pictures, you tell the story. You give all the details--who, when, where, what's the occasion, etc.

So many times I've looked thru ancient photo albums with my 75 yr old uncle. And when I'd say "Who's that woman?" He would say, "Hmmmm, that could be your great aunt margaret. No, wait, I think that was my cousing Alvin's wife. Or maybe it was..." With scrapbooking, you document. So the names, dates and events are passed down, in an archival safe method, from generation to generation.

It's a lot of work and takes a lot of organization. It can be expensive as well, if you don't have outlets you can shop. But you can utilize your own creativity in whatever way works for you. Some folks like stamping, freestyle drawing, beads, brads, etc. I'm a sticker and pretty papers girl myself.

For those of you who have a Dollar Tree nearby, check down the stationary section for all kinds of scrapping papers, stickers, scrapbooks, and other supplies. My Dollar Tree is selling a package of 12 x 12 decorative pages in many themes for $1. I think there are 5 or 6 pages in a pack!! They also sell the clear protective sheet covers, 10 in a pack, for $1. You just can't beat that! Big Lots has also started carrying scrapping supplies. I recently got 10 decorative cut scissors and a wonderful rubbermaid-like organizing carousel for them for $10.

Penny, you just gotta scrapbook that pic of your sheltie with a cute little caption underneath that says something like, "I'm next in line for Rudolph's job!" LOL

Peg, take your "cookbooks" one step further by printing the recipes and stuff on acid free decorative paper, with themes that match recipe or the poem. And THEN add pictures of mom and grandmom who have been making the recipe for years or of the friend who sent or wrote the poem. Include their full names, dates they wrote the poem, and a little bit about why the recipe or poem will always remind you of that person. Tell the full story so years from now, a certain recipe will have a special meaning for your grandkids. As we get older, we tend to get sentimental, so feed that sentimentality. I think you'll enjoy the creative endeavor. I was hooked from the time I saw a friend's well designed scrapbook. I just showed such history, creativity, and love.

Flo, I'll warn ya, the scrapbook stores that sell only scrapping supplies are expensive. If you can find a small one that isn't fully computerized yet and still does inventory by hand, you might could help them do inventory in exchange for supplies. Ours did that for a few years. And I got in on the last inventory before they went computerized. I worked a few hours and got about $200 worth of supplies. Naturally, I got the stuff I couldn't normally get--carrying cases, organizers, cutters, etc.

If you have a Dollar Tree or Big Lots, check them out for scrapping supplies. They're cheaper than Walmart and Hobby Lobby even. And remember, Hobby Lobby is always having sales. Go to their website and sign up for their weekly sales ad. Then you can catch them when the scrapping supplies on sale for 1/2 price. Just about every week, something in the scrapping section is 50% off. My HL also has clearanced items on the end caps of the scrapping aisles. I never pay retail for anything. LOL
