I've always used spikes but am never certain they are really working. Also, what about using Preen instead of a spike? It contains fertilizer and also kills the weeds. Preen is a pre emergent and will kill off weeds, flower seeds etc. as they germinate. If you want to use this, make sure it is as a pre emergent, not as a weed killer.
