I found a whole bunch of these mushrooms in my yard today. I've never seen this many mushrooms here, only the occasional one popping up. Anyone know what they are? I'm not going to try eat them, but just curious as to what they are.

The first picture is how they look when they start out, narrow. Then they expand, and curl up (second picture). The third picture is a group of these mushrooms, in various stages.

i know what that first one looks like but i won't say. it sure doesn't look like a mushroom! i've got some odd toadstools in my yard this year, too. none as exciting as yours tho, BB. i'm wondering if i need some lawn lime out there?

FOZ! I was wondering whether my soil was conducive to fungi since there are so many of them out there. They like lime?

You see, fungi likes such things as compost and fertilizer, and i'm sure there is an over-abundence of the latter at your domicile for it to feed on.

Blue has tons of fertilizer at her house, Caz. It's been piling up for years.

that's interesting, caz. i was always told that toadstools liked acidic soil and you were supposed to use lawn lime to get rid of them. your info makes a whole lot more sense.

I was told that they grow in decomposing matter like leaves, vegetable matter etc. I was also told by my grandfather to pick the fungi before they drop their spores and you can cut down on the number that way. So as one pops up pick it and put it in the garbage not compost.
