racegirl wins!!!! the mystery plant is Abrus Precatortius aka Rosary Pea, Crab's Eyes, Jequirity and many other common names. it's a perennial vine hardy in zones 9B to 11. it's native to India and also indigenous to Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Florida(now), Indonesia and Surinam. it grows in full sun/part shade and well drained moist soil. the toxin contained in the seeds is Abrin. it causes stomach distress, high fever, pulmonary edema and retinal hemorrage among other things. one well-chewed seed will kill a child or an adult. it's particularily dangerous around children who are attracted to the bright red and black seeds. cooking will kill the toxins and is used in some countries as a contraceptive and in the treatment of diabetes and chronic nephritis. the name Rosary Pea comes from the practice of using the seeds to make rosary beads.
