Anyone have advice on when to pull acidanthera, coleus, canna bulbs? I have always done it when I had time, but have read to wait for the first frost. Last year when I pulled the acidanthera there were tons of little 'baby' bulbs - many of these just grew leaves this year when I planted them but no flowers - do they need a few years to mature before they flower? Anyone need acidanthera? I have tons, but can't promise what they'll do. BTW-I let them dry out of the sun and put them in sand in the coolest part of my unfinished basement - this seems to do well except last Jan when we had a weird thaw, the basement flooded and I found out I had holes in my tupperware! A lot of my bulbs molded and I lost all the dahlias I had. I have to wait until next year to plant more dahlias ($$ is tight, baby needs a new roof!!) and don't know where to put them for a mass planting....hummmm. |

With the canna bulbs, I wait until the first freeze, then cut the plants off right away. If you wait, the bulbs go mushy & are ruined. Then you can wait for a week or more before you dig them, provided the ground doesn't freeze also. I then dig them up with a spade & take off as much of the dirt as possible & lay them out to dry alittle. (make sure they don't freeze) I then take more of the dry dirt off, put them in a burlap bag & hang them from rafters in the coolest part of our basement. There are alot of other ways you can take care of them--this is just how I do it. I divide them in the spring when I plant them by just tearing them apart or cutting. Also take out any that are shriveled or bad at that time. |

I dig the tubers and hose off the excess soil, setting them in a dry, sunny spot for a few days to dry out. Before storing them I dust the tubers (they aren't bulbs) with powdered sulphur or copper as a fungicide. The tubers are then placed in a paper grocery bag which I close with duct (wide grey tape) tape. I place these grocery bags in a large, thick paper bag like one that is used for sunflower seed (for the birds so to speak). I put these bags in the coolest and driest......this driest part is important....part of the basement. Yes, the smaller tubers will need to grow larger before the plants that emerge will flower. |
