I put in new bulbs last week - BJs had some nice looking tulips and daffs - Polish Polka! Lovely pink - can't wait to see them bloom. Home Depot had nice bulbs too - large economy sized bags! I did the narcissus thisyear with white and yellow - love them. I decided to plant in 3's rather than a long line - I'll see if I like it next year. Will have to wait for a bunch of Hyacinth until next year - I am on a budget! I always see so many things I want to plant. I have a slew of grape hyacinth that next year I'll probably split, and something I can't remember the name of - green and white slender leaves, white flowers, low to the ground - bloom in spring - very dainty and lovely. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyway, the gloomy days of winter are here but I can look forward to my new green shoots in March/April!

Plant them now, so that they can settle in before the ground freezes. Just plant them to the depth indicated on the package and let mother nature do the rest. Some people sprinkle Bulb Boost (?) or bloodmeal in the planting holes (to fertilize the bulbs) before covering them up. So don't be nervous, we all make gardening mistakes, how else are we to learn about what works and doesn't work in our gardens.

Oh man, just by reading this thread, I am really behind in my bulb shopping and planting. I guess I will hit the stores this weekend and see what is on clearance. LOL

I just got a shipment of bulbs from the Dutch Bulb place and I am nervous because I am new to gardening and I have never planted bulbs before. I have no idea where to put them, and I am running out of time because Im in zone 5...its going to be very chilly here soon.

I haven't seen much chatting about planting Bulbs yet this fall season. Oh I guess fall just came upon us. Wow I love summer............good bye summer! Well, I'm off today to buy some bulbs. I'm in California so the bulb's that like frezzing weather don't do very well here along the coast. I'm thinking about some iris, lillies and of course my favorite freesia's. I have a $35 gift card for Smith & Hawkin so I'll check their supply first then if I don't see what I like I'll head off to Roger's Garden's you out to check out their site www.rogersgardens.com very high end but they have the freshest no-fail bulbs. And I needed to buy some sweet pea seed's too! Now there is another favorite of mine. I love the double ruffled one's. Renee's seed's always has great varitiey..

Well, I would love to hear from all of you about your bulb planting idea's. Your techneque's for planting and what soil activator's if any you use etc and what your favorite bulb is.

I went to our garden centre and co-op and the selection is pitiful. When I asked about it, they said that people aren't planting bulbs the way they used to. Guess they're all into low-maintenance shrubery. I'm hemming and hawing as to whether I should just get what they have there (not the best grade and not much of a selection) or order from a catalogue. I prefer to see the bulbs first, but I may not have a choice this year, and I don't know whether it's too late to order from catalogues.

I've purchased a few from Walmart, but I didn't have good luck last year with the ones I got from Walmart and Kmart. I am waiting for some to come from catalogs, hopefully they will be better. I'm making a new bed for daffodils, grape hyacinths, and lilies. I ordered quite a few different lilies since my local selection is so poor and I love them. I have plenty of time, though, before I can put them in the ground. Plenty of time to plan for more!!

I already planted mine a few weeks back. I put in some tulips, daffodils, anemones, irises, and alliums. Divided some existing irises too at the same time. I am waiting for some nice lilies to come out. Haven't really seen any lilies yet. I got tired and did not plant to the maximum depth though... :o Make sure you put some bone meal or bulb food in the holes for your bulbs.

i just bought two small bags of bulbs from Willson's, a local garden center. i usually order from Dutch Gardens but they didn't have what i was looking for. i got 1 bag of Red Ridinghood tulips and 1 bag of white Triumph tulips. still waiting to be planted but now's the time! hope the deer don't get them in the Spring! i've found w/bulbs you get what you pay for. the better catalogs and garden centers stock larger bulbs that perform really well. the money spent is worth it, i think.
