I got 2 old bowling balls at the resale shop for $3 each last year. They look really pretty, and if you put the holes at the bottom, no one knows what they are! I got the stands at a Big Lots, a kind of dollar store.

I covered a bowling ball in mosaic mirror tiles and it is beautiful and nothing can knock that baby over. You dont need a stand, just leave the thumb hole empty and then stick it onto a metal rod stuck in the ground. Looks like a colored Tootsie Pop in the garden. :o

I have one that isn't just round...it has a little "loop" formed out of the glass so it looks more like a Christmas Tree ornament. I have it hung from my maple tree. It looks so pretty! When it gets to about the middle of October, I bring it indoors and hang it in my kitchen window. I guess it is not really a typical gazing ball, but since I have kids and a dog I figured anything on a stand would not survive so I went with this instead.

Great idea. At least you won't have to worry about it getting broke. The only thing that could possibly get broken is someones foot it they were standing near it and knocked it off.

did i say i'd never had a gazing ball break? well, i can't say that anymore. in a wind storm we had earlier in the week my 12" gazing ball was blown off it's cement...yes, cement pedestal and smashed into a gazillion pieces! AJ's idea of using old bowling balls is looking better and better!

But a bowling ball wouldn't reflect the garden. Isn't that the whole purpose of a gazing ball?

i don't care, BB. that ball wasn't cheap! it was blue and didn't really reflect good anyway. i bought it for the color and to put in front of my delphiniums when they start looking bedraggled. and now it's in the dumpster.

Oh, ok. You were using it as an ornament, rather than to reflect the garden. I see. That's why I never got one. Too many kids in the neighbourhood, yards are small, so balls are constantly flying into each others yards.
