That too is true. What kills me most are parents, so many of them when their darlings are brought home or called, will argue " not my child, he/she would NEVER do anything like that", or you have the " I can't do anything about it". The percentage of parents that take positive action is very small in comparison.

The adults he deals with every night, is a whole other story.

Birdie, I don't have coffee every day. The days I skip are usually hot. But I do need a little kickstart in the morning usually. Isn't it just plain unAmerican not to have that morning cup of coffee? It's one of the few luxuries I think I can afford. Someday the doctor may say, "Cool it". Then I guess it's over. But for now, I get to have a cup.

Sass, when my brother-in-law got his job I was concerned about his personality changing. A cop deals with so many undesirable people that it can warp their outlook. I advised him at the time to develop some friendships outside the law enforcement circle so he could at least rub shoulders with some somewhat 'normal' people. He did that and actually fared pretty well for his 30 year hitch.

Ok... newbie dumb question here.

So after I drink my daily pot of coffee, I should dump the used grounds on my tomatoes and peppers? Should I test the soil first to make sure it's not already acidic? My peppers last year were slow and puny.

I just planted the tomatoes today - I grow them (and peppers) in old tires to keep them warm. Usually I add a lot of purchased composted manure and topsoil to them; this year I just used garden soil. I generally mulch them heavily with grass clippings to keep them moist and weed-free. The tomatoes usually do very well and the peppers so-so.

So would coffee grounds be a good thing?

Cathe, there is no such thing as a dumb question. I like to know what my soil needs, if anything. And the only way I know for sure is to test it. I know that it is fertile because I have so much horse manure to use in it. But I guess there is also the possibility of too much fertilization. But the pH has to be in the right range for the plants to utilize the nutrients that are available to them. Our soil is naturally on the acid side because of all our rain, but I add lime to bring it up closer to neutral. The lime (calcium carbonate) will also help prevent blossom end rot on the tomatoes.

I started doing something like that too, Don. But I didn't spray the plants, I put the liquid at the base of the plant evert couple of weeks. I used it on the peppers too. I don't remember who first posted that information, but I got it here on GG.

DON

My County Agent says that epsom salts, Magnesium sulphate has to be applied to the soil

The soil seperates the magnesium and the sulphate into the forms that the plant can absorb.
