WTG Randy! Love those freebies. I've been using the coffee grounds around the roses and tomatoes for about 5 years. Last year I could tell the difference with a few of the rose bushes that I forgot to "fertilise" with the grounds. Needless to say, I've corrected that mistake this year...lol. Anybody know if I'll screw up my compost if I dump a load of old pickles in it? Will all the vinegar brine they were pickled in add too much acidity to the mix? I've discovered about 50 or more jars in my mother's basement that didn't get used.......and are waaaaaaay past it....some of the jars are labelled from 1995 or earlier! Yuck....I'm not looking forward to opening some of them...especially the ones that the lids and rings are rusting. Oh well. At least the jars will be reusable. |

Rain will eventually dilute the vinegar anyway. But why don't you just pour the brine down the drain and compost the pickles? BTW, the rings should not have been left on the jars once they were sealed. I used to leave the rings on my canned goods until I read some better directions. And I experienced the same thing. I couldn't get the rings off some of the jars. I take all the rings off now after the jars have all cooled off and store them that way. When I ship jars, I will sometimes put the rings back on loosely. But by that time I have gone over the jar with a damp cloth to remove any residue. |

Whit, it seems I am always in trouble over something. I suppose I could stay out of trouble if I stayed in my room all day, but it isn't likely. |

I put a Tbsp per plant per month. Coffee grounds is a good source of N and OM never too late to add to the soil Worms will turn Coffee grounds to worm castings that all plants can use |

It's been about two years since I set foot in a Starbuck's Coffee Shop, Whit. But I visit the Underground Coffee Shop weekly. I have been going there for about 5 years and unless they have a new person on duty, they don't even ask me what I want. They start making my coffee drink when they see me pull up outside and sometimes it's ready for me when I come in the door. Then I sit down at my regular spot on the counter and do the daily cussword puzzle. When you buy ten coffee drinks, the eleventh one is free. The reason I mention that is the next one I get will taste awfully good. It's the free one. |

My next door neighbor, the biologist, gets coffee grounds from some coffee shop (we don't have a Starbucks) and has spread them all over his garden. Ever so often I smell the coffee coming from his yard and I know he has been spreading again. He gets it by the bucketfuls. Is it too late to put epson salts and coffee grounds on my tomatoes and peppers? They need all the help they can get. |

When your property smells like a forgotten coffee pot, then you used too much |

Sass, I am happy that the epsom salts works. I must give credit to my mother for that hint. She became too infirm to care for herself in her last 3 years ( a total of 93) and at least once a month, she reminded me to put at least a tablespoon of epsom salts under each plant, and water it in. I doubt a little more will hurt either because most of my flowering plants love it and do well, even with our hot Tx. temperatures. Most of my coffee grounds go in the compost pile but about once a month or so, I toss the coffee basket remains under my roses, tomatos or whatever is growing. I'm slowing down on my gardening but can't quit altogether so I will carry on the way my mom taught me and then click into GG to see what new info I can pick up from these God sent informative and nice folks here. Our little storms continue here with a new disturbance in the gulf but we really haven't seen more than a few good soaking showers, which I may say we needed badly. We had a burn ban in effect until today, so I suppose we have had sufficient rains for them to decide we can carefully burn if we need to. I will wait for a bit more rain just to be on the safe side. Nothing scares me worse than a runaway brush fire. Enough rambling. Hope everyone is having a blessed day. Marie K |
