Cole crops are generally good (broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kohlrabi). I tried peas one year though and they didn't do well here as a fall crop.

Randy when is the right time to plant fall crops for our zone? I think you are the same zone as me, i am a zone 5 here just a couple hours away from you.

Probably does, but there is enough room for error that I wouldn't worry too much about it. Our date for last frost is April 15. On two separate years, I lost susceptible plants after that date. So I don't put out the susceptible plants until May 15. This year it wouldn't have made any difference because we didn't have a frost after April 15. On the other hand, we had such a cool spring that we are running at least a month late on tomato ripening. Over where you are, I would probably try putting some plants out early, but hold some in reserve in case Ma Nature gets cranky. There are some of the plants that can withstand frost (spinach, carrots, peas, etc.).

Im in Zone 5 also and I lost sevearal veggies in 2003 and 2004 I dont put several of them out till May25th to June 15th and even later on some like corn.
For my winter crop Im working with broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, collards and mustard greens and whatever else seed I have. I am thinking I should of started all of them already Iread 90 days before freezing temps hit which can come anytime from Novemer 15th to January..Who knows I dont*LOL!
I will need to transplant some of the cold crop soon Im behind on moving them due to time and fear of loosing them and waitng to pull "done " cops out.Not cetain where to put 'em..
Potatoes do winter well too .had a crop come up all by thierself!*LOL

Happy Winter Sowing!
