(I hope this post goes through ok...with all the weird stuff going on with the site today...)
The last few days we have had a good steady rain. Great for our drought situation! Of course, I have gotten used to doing something in the yard most every afternoon. So, instead...I had some nice cups of coffee on the front porch and watched the rain :)
One morning, when I woke up...I noticed an owl perched on the fence by the creek. We hear owls a lot around here...and my husbad has named the one we hear, Norbert. Maybe this was Norbert showing himself :) . A little later, I also saw some sort of giant bird walking across the creek (might have been a white herron?) I couldn't catch a picture of him though. Here is a little shot of the owl:
It dried up enough today for my hubby to go get some loads of compost for the newly built veggie beds! Hooray!!!
And, in case there was any question as to the necessity of the chicken wire surrounds:
HAH! needless to say...the doggies had a fun day in the garden too!
While my husband was picking up the loads I also took advantage of the wet ground and did my first (of many, I am sure) spring weeding sessions! It felt good to get that done. We got most of the beds full and just need to finish up one bed. Yeah! Gotta love progress!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I have been taking advantage of both the season end sales at the garden centers and my time off from work to get a lot of things done in the garden. My local garden center has all their left over bulbs on sale for 75% off, so I planted 20 purple and 20 orange tulips in the front yard. I also planted 30 daffodils by the azaleas in the back yard. I am still waiting on some allium bulbs I purchased on line. Those will go in the back yard so that I can see them while I do dishes :).
I got 2 more double knockouts for 50% off to compete the grouping by the bird house.
I also spent a good bit of time applying a generous layer of pine straw over the front beds. It took 36 bales! It used to take 90+, but now that the plants are growing in niceley...it takes less. It feels so good to have this done. Here are some picts:

Yesterday, after taking down most of the Christmas decor, I spent a majority of the afternoon weeding the back yard and getting it ready for its winter pine straw application. I have 2 Madame Alfred Roses on order that I will plant on either side of the arbor in the back. I selected this particular rose because: it is thornless, evergreen, climbing, and blooms white....the only rose I could find that met all of these criteria (which is what I wanted for the arbor).
While I was doing this work in the back, I noticed that for the first time, my hellebores are blooming! I got these as little seedlings from my mom's garden 4 yrs ago...patience pays off!
Can't wait for my goodies to come in the mail...but I really can't wait to see the bulbs come up in the spring!
Happy New Year Everyone!

Well, we had a bit of a drizzle today, really didn't even wet the soil beneath the mulch, but provided some nice humidity for the garden. I got a couple of projects checked off my list...moved my blueberry bush to a much better spot...hopefully now it will actually produce for us. Also, divided a Sedum Autumn Joy and scattered the divisions around my front porch bed. Had to water my transplants with dish water, but I think it worked just fine.
Also, did some more clean up.
Some light weeding
and Cutting back of some fading bulb foliage
I think I will work on some more dividing this weekend.

We had a busy weekend here at soapHOUSE! And, I spent a majority of it in the garden...as usual :) Pretty much worked on my usual chores: creek cleanout, weeding, deadheading, etc. I finally decided to give up on my zukes that the squash borers got to. So, I pulled them out and put in carrot seeds in their place. Hopefully they will do something! I also got a good shot of the first white eggplant to show:

I am so excited and hope he makes it to maturity! I also got a shot of a fully ripe tomatillo right before I picked him and ate em!
I also got the new berm ready for pinestraw. Once I get that...I will plant the little maple. Can't wait!
Here are some more moments captured along the way:
My new pink coreopsis:

Found this guy on a pepper leaf...i have no idea what he is and I am hoping he is a beneficial:

Off to the garden now...

OH. MY. GOSH!!!!
Its Raining! We haven't had rain in FOREVER!!!!!
At first I was kinda annoyed because I was in the middle of weeding, but after a nano second, I thanked the heavens and moved inside for the virtual gardening world.
I've been working on those pesky little summer weeds in the back....my next BIG project is to clear the overgrowth behind our back fence. There is a creek back there somewhere and god only know what else...
Already
starting to think about my garden in the fall too. THink I might plant some brightly colored mums along the back path. Also want to plant a bunch of bulbs. Fun, Fun!

THanks for the warm welcome! I haven't posted any picts yet...every time I get ready to go out and take picts, i end up weeding or trimming, or digging or etc.... I spent the greater part of this afternoon cutting back brush that had come in from my neighbors yard in the back....oi vey!
And, noticed that all of my carrots have aphids :( so, I had to pull all of them out. But, on the brighter side, my eight ball zuchinnis are starting to produce, yeah!
Picts to come soon, I promise
