I had a good weekend in the garden. I was able to get a lot of routine chores done. Mostly weeding. I am happy to report that things are looking pretty good! We haven't had a good rain in a while, though...so things are a bit wilty. My watering time is tomorrow morning, so I will hopefully be able to help that situation soon.
The veggie beds are just growing like mad and I am looking forward to a bountiful harvest! Everything looks pretty good so far, but the broccoli is already showing signs of trouble (like last year). I think I may just be better off buying this at the store. HAH! Also, it seemed to have gotten too hot too fast for the sugar snap peas and the spinach, so I am going to fill in the holes with some similar warm season varieties. We did harvest the first sweet Gypsy pepper over the weekend and it made a nice addition to our dinner salad:

I also collected another bowl full of radishes today that I will add to our salad tonight. This time I will just cut them up raw and forgo to greens.
Today, while working on the weeding in the back, I noticed that my astillbes seem to have mealy bugs, so I sprayed them with insecticidal soap - hopefully that will help. Also, The Bearded Irises that had the aphid infestation got a nice trimming way back on the affected foliage. It looks better. I am hoping that I didn't cut so much back that they will have trouble storing up nutrients for the blooms next year...we shall see.
So, tomorrow I hope to get some watering done in the morning and I will continue to do some weeding in the front.

We had more wonderful rain last night and it is really helping along the garden! Also helping cut down on my need to water which is wonderful!. A couple of nights ago, we enjoyed our first harvest from the veggie garden: RADISHES...I know, they are always the first things, but still exciting:

I cooked them up, greens and all with some salt, pepper and olive oil and they made a great side dish to go with our rotissiere chicken.
I also had a chance the other day to work on some weeding and capture some recent happenings in the garden:
The Clematis (that we planted when my oldest daughter was born 2 1/2 yrs ago) is looking great this year:

My miniature rose bushes are in full bloom right now and just such a sweet accent in the front yard:

The front perennial bed is just bursting and the daylilies have just begun:

The annual planter that my girl and I planted up together is filling in nicely and really looks good when she hasn't picked all the flowers off - HAH!

All the rain has certainly helped along the weeds too...so when I have a chance I will get to some of those in the front yard as well, to keep things tidy. I am still enjoying the results of working so hard over the winter and not having as much to do right now, except enjoying the garden and watching things mature and fill in :)

So, since my hubby and I began construction today of 3 more raised veggie beds...I thought it a good excuse to order some more things on my plant "shopping list" . I recently received a catalog from Gurney's, who I have never ordered from but have heard good things about. They also had a $25 off coupons...so I couldn't resist! Here is a list of my goodies to come in the mail soon:
BEAN BUSH EARLY CONTENDER (Seeds)

BEAN BUSH IMPROVED GOLDEN WAX(Seeds)

BEET CHIOGGIA GUARDSMARK (seeds)

BEAUTYBERRY PURPLE (plant)- this will go in the front of the new mixed border where we took out the maple in the back

FESTUCA GLAUCA (order of 3 plants) - will go in the berm in the front yard.

COSMOS BRIGHT LIGHTS MIXED (seeds)- these are a big part of the new companion planting scheme...
