Despite the Iris Patch having a MAJOR aphid infestation, they continue to bloom :) They have never really done too much in seasons pasts (they are relatively new to my garden- passed along from my husband's grandfather's farm), so its fun to see what color they are. So far we have white and today, the purples are blooming. In the picture, they look more maroon colored. It depends which way the sun is hitting:

I am also very pleased to report that some of the veggie seeds are starting to come up already and the freshly planted hostas are looking good. Also, the peony buds look like they might burst open any day now!
Oi Vey! Just had to take a quick break from writing this to go tell 3 neighborhood kids to get out of our creek and not mess up all my freshly planted goodies! They were swinging from bank to bank from the grape vines that I cut back! ARGH! I hate being THAT neighbor....but really, I don't want them to get hurt either, would be our liability you know. They quickly sauntered off with their tail between their legs.

So, since my hubby and I began construction today of 3 more raised veggie beds...I thought it a good excuse to order some more things on my plant "shopping list" . I recently received a catalog from Gurney's, who I have never ordered from but have heard good things about. They also had a $25 off coupons...so I couldn't resist! Here is a list of my goodies to come in the mail soon:
BEAN BUSH EARLY CONTENDER (Seeds)

BEAN BUSH IMPROVED GOLDEN WAX(Seeds)

BEET CHIOGGIA GUARDSMARK (seeds)

BEAUTYBERRY PURPLE (plant)- this will go in the front of the new mixed border where we took out the maple in the back

FESTUCA GLAUCA (order of 3 plants) - will go in the berm in the front yard.

COSMOS BRIGHT LIGHTS MIXED (seeds)- these are a big part of the new companion planting scheme...

RADISH MIXTURE PKT/G (seeds)

CARROT TENDERSWEET (seeds)

BEAN POLE PURPLE POD (seeds)

ASPARAGUS PURPLE PASSION 2 Year starts

I am super excited! I will probably get all of the seeds soon and the plants will arrive in early March hopefully. I was so excited to find purple asparagus! (purple is my favorite color)

Well, if I wasn't sure if it was summer or not, I know it IS now! IT IS HOT!!! And, our afternoon showers have stopped happening so I am back to watering. Its really just routine maintenance around here these days. Of course there is also the creek clean our project, the new berm in the back, etc....but I digress. The major projects are all in a place now where I need my hubby's help to continue (Chainsawing behind the creek, hauling dirt, moving pine straw) So, I have to wait until he has "time" (LOL)
So, today I mowed the lawn and did routine weeding and took some more pictures:
The other day we scored some free small rocks off of craigslist, so I nestled those in among the bottle path:

The purple eggplants are taking off and we have already enjoyed some for dinner!
The White Eggplant is lookin good!
A bumper crop of blackberries is ripening :)
The green eyed susans are blooming and adding great color to the front of the house:
In the spring I planted a variety of Sweet Potato Vines in the very front of my yard where I am still sparse on plants. My hope was that they would spread and help limit the amount of weeding I would have to do in that area. Well, it has been working GREAT! A small investment has saved me lots of time pulling weeds. Gotta love it:

Heres a good shot of my front yard as seen from the street. Must say, I am ready for fall and getting excited thinking about all the fall gardening projects!
My photos were also victim to the GG computer crash :( I'm SO bummed! That took me so long to do and I really enjoyed having the chronological slide show to watch of my yard. So, I will start uploading and redoing soon.

We have been consistently enjoying harvests from our garden. Its so fun to go out before dinner and pick some yummies to come up with something with for dinner! Healthy, yummy and cheap! Gotta love it!

Another good productive day in the garden! I pretty much did routine chores. I posted an ad on craigslist this weekend stating that I needed pine straw and that I would rake if someone would let me take. Well, we got quite a few responses and my hubby went to pick up a load for me on his way home from work ( I had to twist his arm and beg a little :) So, I got that spread. I can tell its "used" but hey, beggers can not be choosers! He is going to go get more for me day after tomorrow! yippee!
I also harvested my first Kholrabi:

Susie, the dachshund says "hey, that would go good with hot dogs" So, I took her advice and shredded the kholrabi and will cook with onion to make a relish that will dress our dogs this evening. Yum, Yum!
Looks like I'll be harvesting my first cherokee purple heirloom tomato soon. This guy is huge and I have been watching him for sometime now wondering if he was ever going to ripen...looks like he's startin to!
Looks like 3 tomatoes in one doesn't it?
I also got some more creek clean up done and consolidated some branches and brush to get ready to haul to the curb tomorrow for wed. pickup. Other than that, I did routine weeding. Here are some moments captured along the way:
Mystery crop of shrooms growin out of compost...

Purple Hyacinth Bean Vine against Annual Sweet Potato Vine. I know I took a lot of picts of this one, but I couldn't stop myself...so pretty:
Close up of Liriope Bloom:
Some of the surviving petunias from my "annual saga" They look pretty good when isolated close up! LOL!
'Till next time...
