I did some experimental late summer seed sowing and I now have zinnia's blooming! Fun to have this time of year.
On another note, i just received an adapter that I purchased off of Amazon for my digital SLR camera that makes all of my old 35mm camera lenses fit on my digital! I can't wait to play with the macro in the garden!!!
When you have a happy elephant ear! For several years now I have been drooling over and attempting to grow a great gunnera. (Dinosaur Food Plant). This season was my closest attempt and I am choosing to believe for the moment that the plant showing no signs of life is only dormant and not dead! I think these guys really are only happy in the PNW part of the US. However, I have an elephant ear that is planted on the bank of our creek that seems very happy and has gotten pretty large this season. I know the leaves aren't 7-8 feet across as the gunnera promises, but they are still a nice show:
My hand (which is generally small) shows the size:
The coolest thing about this is that the original plant that has been divided all over my yard, came from my late-grandfather in-law....a very special man that we get to think of all season long as we enjoy our elephant ears!
Well, it got nice and cool here, then it got wicked hot again. The nights are still a bit cool, but not the days! i was planning on purchasing all of the yummy soil amendments and beginning to top dress the beds, but I think I was premature in my thinking. If I top dress the beds now, I might trick the plants into growing again - don't want to stress them out! So, I will wait....
In the mean time, I have been slowly tackling the beginnings of fall clean-up. This weekend, the datura bed will get cleaned out - that is always such a chore. i might whip out the chain saw!
I am also keeping up with the watering in the hot days - and enjoying watching the leaves start to change :) Although, funny thing - the leaves on the fruit trees aren't changing - they are just falling off! Those poor fruit trees have just struggled - maybe I should give up on them, I just don't know....perhaps I will give them another season to attempt something glorious.
On another note: We had the pleasure of visiting my In-laws over the Labor Day weekend in Memphis, We had such a great time! We went to the Memphis Zoo and hung out in their wonderful gardens/pool - my MIL is a master gardener. My FIL has made a wonderful hobby of "Aqua-Scaping." Essentially it is gardening in aquariums. He asked me to bring my camera and take some picts of his beautiful creations. He focuses on fresh-water and I think they are all works of art!
