I began designing something called a "berm" at the front edge of our front yard by the street. The idea came to me sometime last summer, as hubby was digging up rocks by the barrels full from the backyard and sifting rocks from dirt. Well, the area is where (someday) my storage shed will go, so since there was all this rock-free dirt....the quest became WHERE TO PUT IT.
Ahhh, the light bulb clicked on. Since he had let the grass die (out front( last year (artfully forgetting his promises that "Well, if we owned our own place I'd help take care of it") I needed to come up with someplace to put this mound of dirt and someplace to plant my flowers. Voila, the berm idea was born. So, yes, it was ME who had to haul wheelbarrel after wheelbarrel from the backyard through the lumpy grass beside the house, all the way to the end of the front yard. (nothing like a man around the house...humpf).
I decided to take all these huge rocks that I had dug up from our last place (that horrible rock-yard rental) and use those to boarder this berm. Hmm, looked okay. I asked hubby to help me put down the weed barrier that "I had to purchase", but that never happened. (*sigh) So, fine, I got tired of waiting, so I started plants some of my plants. These are the plants that HE promised "as soon as we move in, I will dig all the holes so you can put them back in the ground". That was April 2005. This was now summer 2006. I got "some" of them in, but still wanted that weed barrier, and still ever hopeful that he would miraculously surprise me by being willing to help accomplish that.
By October, my birthday came and still I was hauling dirt. Okay, I'm handicapped, so it's not like walking across lumpy "anything" is easy. For my birthday I received some tulip bulbs, and late that afternoon my dh actually offered to help me get some planted in the berm. I about fainted.
Now it's Spring 2007 and I have lovely Triumph Red Tulips blooming along the berm. Looks pretty darn good. Wish I knew how to post a picture here.
It's coming along nicely. Thank you God.
