Well, here it is...the first "official" bit of spring in the Willamette Valley. You see, every mid Feb, the rain stops for a week or 2 and the sun comes out. The low temps are REALLY low, but highs can get up to 60. Then, it gets back to normal. Nothing but rain for months....
Oh well, that is what the greenhouse is for. Last month we had 2 feet of snow fall on our foothill and cover the greenhouse roof. I was a little concerned, but the pitch was enough to allow it to slide off after a few days.
Feb 10:
Seeded: Corn (early and mid)--we'll see about these... the soil is probably still too cold for them.
Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage
Feb 16:
The Nursery in the next town is just getting trees and cane berries in. (roses too) Bought 2 raspberries, 24 Seascape Strawberries, and 2 Grapes (Lakemont & a red one)
Robert wants a fig tree.. I don't have the heart to tell him that he may have to give up that idea. We have no heat or sun here on the Northern side of the hill. :(
We are supposedly adopting a black Labrador juvenile male dog belonging to my neighbor up the hill. His name is Stanley. They say he is well behaved and smart, but doesn't get along with the other Lab they have. OK, whatever. As it is now, we have Faith, the 10 year old English Mastiff and Holly-- the 1 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Those two are constantly at each others' throats.. How can we survive another one????
That is why I prefer cats. We have 5 of them. They have no issues...
I ordered potato seeds from Rommingers' today. Their website says that due to freezing weather, they don't anticipate any shipments to go out until next week. Normally, they ship beginning in Jan. I've only heard of this farm from Master Gardener class, but they have some fingerlings and organic Yukons I am curious about....
Planted asparagas next to the rhubarb this afternoon. I hope I did it right... The roots are 2yo. We'll find out next year what happens.
I think I have decided to finally make some permanent plans for the garden space. We need an area for grapes, herbs, berries, corn and veggies. The fruit trees are planted around the inside perimeter of the garden, so those are done. Neither Robert nor I want to move them again.
Uh-oh, time to feed the animals.. I wish they would do it themselves, or at least get paying jobs.... :O
