Butterfly bush

I was given a butterfly bush in the fall from a friend.  Back in March we had some warm weather and my bush started to shoot out new growth.  We then had some cold weather, around 30 degres and snow.  My established butterfly bushs feet away are already having new growth, while my bush I planted in the fall looks dead.  I pruned a little to see if there was any green inside the stem, but saw nothing. Do you think it went into shock and died? 
Or just that it's alive, but more torwards the ground.
