Much to my suprise, I have picked 4 cukes and they are so very bitter. I need your advice quickly! They are planted in the flower bed where my Lantana is. Could there be a cross between the two? I feel like pulling up the vine, but not sure that is the problem. We have not had rain in a long while. I thought maybe the problem is not letting them ripen long enough on the vine. So this morning I picked one that is turning yellow at the end. Maybe that will be the problem...if not????????
My orka is hardening just as the develop. I just believe the lack of rain could be my problem. I water but probably not enough! Help me out here, PLEASE!!!!!
My grandson was here the other day. He was explaining to my older granddaughter how the clouds make rain for us. This was his story..
The clouds form from steam collected from earth..You know like when you have to pee and you hold it....then you just can't hold it anymore..then you just pee all over the place...Well, that is how we get rain...when the clouds get so full they just have to pee...
I laughed so hard at his explanation..He is all of 7 years of age....
I lost all my roses. Not sure if the banana water did it or the epsom salt. But killed 'em dead!..Just one that didn't receive the added banana water or salt is still hanging in there. This has been a very hot dry summer here in Texas.
Good luck with all your gardening. I just swel with pride when I read your blogs about how well your gardening is going. Just as though I am there enjoying it with you. Thank all of you for the pictures you have posted...I truely enjoy seeing them...
Across the miles we share, best wishes to you all............

Yes, there is blooms on my tomatoe plants. I had given up!!!
Thank all of you for your advice about the landscaping fabric. I pulled it all up and my plants thank you sooooo much! They look as though to be taking a good breath of frsh air. All have perked up and look delightfully green.
I have baby cukes on the vine too.
I tried the epsum salt. Read a lot about it on the net. Used it on 1 tomato plant and on my lilac shrub. Tomatoe plant looks ok a day later but the lilac seemed to have burned where i sprinkled it on the leaves.
Everyone have a great 4th and be safe for the holiday week-end.

This has been a lot of work! I have given up on this soil! Tried all I know and tried almost everything I have read! My soil will not grow vegies. The flowers are somewhat succesful. Since my Daughter and Grandaughter moved out I have had a lot more time to focus on the yard and flower beds. But, I had to pull squash up out of flowerbed. It would set but tiny squash would just dry up. Finally figured out the landscaping fabric was my problem. The cukes are setting! Will watch to see if the develop. There is no landscaping fabic in the garden area. The tomatoes are beautiful plants. Just NOT 1 BLOOM!!!!!! The pole green beans are climbing everywhere but so far no sign of a bloom! Okra is growing really tall but not a bloom in sight. I have bees and butterflies. I just gave up and will watch what happens. I stopped putting miracle grow on the tomatoes to see if that might be the problem.
BUT, my avacado tree (3 years of age) has reached the eve of the house. She is just beautiful, branching out too.
The mimosa I was blessed with by the birds has reached at least 12 feet. All that growth in two years. But it hasn't bloomed either.
The red bud tree has more than doubled this year. The Azaleas are just doing great. Lost all my climbing roses I planted.
Moved all my bulb plants into one bed.
My caladiums have returned from last year. They are multiplying so well.
Help please. My lilac shrub is doing the same as last year. I lost that one.. Now I tried sulfur and it seemed to help at first. So I dusted it again. No change this time. So down to the local nursery I will go to see if they have a suggestion.
I am so blessed and motivated by all you folks are sharing. It makes my day to see all the pics you share. I haven't posted much but have read all your blogs every morning with my coffee. Everyone have a great week!!!!!!!!!!

My Spaghetti Squash has made it to 15'. A lot of blooms but no squash as of yet. My tomatoes are just not growing well. The soil is just not good here. Next planting will be in a raised bed. I read the blog about the banana water. I found the peels did great for my climber. I am going to try it around my new climbers.
What other plants benefit from the water or peels?
Just been to hot to do much here. My daughter has moved out to be with her fiance'. House seems a lot quieter. But as usual I have tried to do too much around the house reorganizing. Now to stiff to play outside.
The grass won't wait on me, so I guess the stiffness will be worked out today. This is supposed to be the coolest day of the week.
I have had problems with the cable due to the storms. No internet has just driven me crazy!!!!!
Everyone play safely in the dirt and don't let the ants bite :)

I have missed reading the blogs sooooooo very much! The storms rolled through and my internet has been off and on for two weeks now. Had the cable company out from 2pm until 10:30pm and then problems until 11:30pm. But praise be..I finally have it all working.
Found 2 watermellon plants in my flower bed. Basset crunched one. But moved the other one. Hope the little darling makes it. I haven't grown watermelon in years. This will be fun to watch if it lives through the transplant!
Well, is late now and have caught up on how well everyone's gardening is going. Everyone have a Great Memorial Week-end. My Hubby will celebrate on Monday as he is a Vietnam Vet. I know he is not alone in all the guys and gals that were wounded over there and other conflicts that have plagued our people with wars. My heart goes out to them all.

I read the forums and decided to plant pole beans along my wooden fence. They are up and look so pretty. Had to put fencing around them to keep my big ole Bassets from stepping on them. I took some cuttings earlier this sping of red tip shrubs and they are looking good. I put out some okra between them. They haven't sprouted yet but I can barely see the dirt rising. My spaghetti squash is trailing along the flower bed filling in all the bare spots. I am so excited. I can't wait to wrap one of those babies up in foil for a good meal :)...
I lost a dear friend last week. It has been a very busy time around here. Her loss has devasted her son that is my daughter's fiance.
Got to get busy in the house now. It has gotten really hot outdoors.
Happy Gardening to you all

I was delighted to see my youngest daughter and my two youngest granddaughters today. They brought me the most wonderful card I could ever dream of having! They visited with me for awhile. Also gave me a really cte purse with a dog on it. I just love those kids. She has always been such a delight to me. She knows just how to fill my heart up with all her love.
A dear friend of my passed away this week so off to the funeral home I went to pay my condolences to the family. She was to be 83 years of age on the 29th of this month.
I was so sorry to hear about the accident and sudden death of Dotty Rambo. Oh what a wonderful song writer she was. Such a talent. I will miss her.

I planted some Poppy seed I purchased at Walmart. Then this lady told me it is against the law to plant them. Does anyone know if this is true?

Sunday (last week) my hubby and I planted 6 climbing roses. Since I lost all the wonderful shade from the tree trimmers, I thought climbing roses was a good idea. 3 Jacob's Coats- 1 pink peace - 1 lavenda ( not a climber. We also pu1 a white climber on the back fence and a yellow. Today I placed my seedlings in the garden. I have tomatoes, squash, cukes, spinach, cilantro, and a pumpkin plant that came up from a fall display. This has been a very week and a half. Had rain on Sunday morning. I stayed out of the yard all day..So sad..Too tired!!
So much rain lately that roses don't look too good. I got them on sale for $2 ea. so not a real bad loss if they don't make it. I soaked them in water 24 hours then cut them back to 6" like the instructions said. But only one has any leaves showing. I used rooting powder too. Maybe that is what I did wrong.
I was so inspired by one of the blogs today. I am going to the feed store tomorrow to get pole beans to plant by my back fence. It is wooden s I think it won't get too hot.
I put in an annual bed in front. It looks a little bare right now.... Begonias and Celosa
I am so excited my mums are budding and some are opening.. They look so happy in the spot I put them in...
I'll have to take pictures tomorrow..
Was so sorry to here about the tornado that hit VA today. I know we have a few members from VA. and hope they are safe.
Happy Gardening to everyone!!!!

I made newspaper pots to set my seed. Was a great idea I got from home and garden! Now the seedlings are appearing. I just put pt and all down in the dirt! I tried the cuttings I read about on here and they have taken root now. I will be a very busy person today!
Hope everyone has a good day today and stay healthy and keep digging and watering.
No tornados-no tree limbs in yard-no cat at front garden......How much better can life be for me today :)

Had five in the area came right over the house! Had a lot of hail but very little damage. The men came this morning to remove the limbs out of back yard. Thank you Lord!!!!! Have to leave to visit friend in hospital. So will post more later. Thank you all for your concerns. I had a nose to nose with electric co. LOL But results were good!
Beautiful day shaping up following the storms.
Apr 14, 2008 | 4:40 PM PST
From 8am til 11am I was on the phone with uttility company. They trimmed the limbs off the electric lines following the storms here. The problem was all the extremely large limbs were left in my back yard. They cover more than half the yard! My newly planted flower garden is buried under all the limbs. They had my young pecan tree bent over under the limbs! I saved the pecan tree but the limbs are too big for me to uncover my flower bed! I can't even see it!
I stayed on the phone all morning and they promised to be out today but they are a NO SHOW! I will give them until 10am tomorrow then I'll try to get the news out here. They cleaned everyones yard off except mine. I was the last for the day. I feel so cheated because they told me they would clear it off before they quit for the day. Enough crying!!!
I did get another flower bed started in the front. Will go to the nursery tomorrow to get plants. I put seed in for vegetables today and flower seed out. I can't seem to find just the right place for an herb garden. Got the seeds started in pots.
I made paper pots for the seeds. I saw it on the home & garden show. It was really easy and you just put the whole thing down in the ground. Hope it works out ok..lol.. I made 46 pots and filled them all!!!!
My pictures of this mess in my yard is posted in book "April" check it out!!
Good day to you all..I am headed for the shower..I think I stink!!!..lol.....Carol

We had some really bad storms in Fort Worth this morning. No damage on my property (thank the Lord), but damage all around me.
My hosta made it through the winter. The winds have my iris' leaning over. They are opening up now. My redbud tree my Mother grew from seed before she passed away has tiny new leaves on it. I was so afraid I had lost it to the dry winter.
Hope all of you in the path of that storm that traveled east out of Texas this morning fairs well with no damage to your property.
By the way "ole Tom Cat" has moved to the other side of my house. Got to go get more moth balls. I found out if they are wet down they work better. Coffee hasn't seem to ward off Ole Tom...lol
Be safe in all these Spring storms & Keep playing in the dirt!
Apr 3, 2008 | 7:43 PM PST
Yes, he is back. Kicked the moth balls out of the way. Left his mark and left!! Just to let me know he still thinks I have the most lavashed flower garden Cat Box on the block!!!
Nothing left to do except to put ammonia out. Hope I don't kill any plants.
My azaleas are just beautiful!! I took 24 cuttings from my red tip shrub. I put them in water. I put 4 in potting soil. I stuck 2 in the ground.(I felt lucky)..LOL Now do I change that water every few days? My first time to take cuttings.
My maiden hair plant has doubled in size this spring. My bulbs didn't bloom. But, my black beard iris's have the bud out now. I was concerned about them blooming.
I really made a mistake on my crepe myrtles. I pruned them back the end of Feb.. Then I read they are not to be pruned until they leaf out. Hope I didn't kill them. They are bare right now. The neighbors are beginning to leaf out.
Help!!! Gardening gone wild here..lol
