Springtime always seems to me like a grand reunion of old friends. The re-emergence of each perennial warms my heart. What resilience! Year after year, against what I think are insurmountable odds, they are there, ready to delight me with their beauty all over again. They're a lesson in faith and hope and endurance. Unfortunately, for the past few years, I've missed one of my old friends - Lavender Mint. A freaky winter was just too much for it. I resolved this year to replace it. My plants arrived last week from a wonderful herb nursery in Ohio called Companion Plants. They have herbs galore! The Lavender Mint is now safely tucked in the ground and doing well.
I got my first Lavender Mint (Mentha aquatica 'Lavender') about 12 years ago from Perennial Pleasures in Vermont. As its name implies, it combines the fragrances of mint and lavender - two of my favorites! Like most mints, it's a spreader. I never minded though with this variety. After it escaped the herb garden and got out into the grass, it became my reward for mowing. Each pass of the mower released this incredible minty lavender aroma. I'm looking forward to enjoying this again.
