I had a nice tray of parsley, thyme and cinammon basil started....tiny little seedlings-- practially new born but doing ok. Went out this morning and the whole tray had been dug in. By WHO????? More like, by what?? A squirrel for sure. I do have more seeds and will redo the whole thing. But my bottom lip is stuck waayyy out for now.
The first of my volunteer zinnias has bloomed and is pink. I bought a pack of marvelous PURPLE ones tonight. Cant wait to get those started. The yellow and orange cosmos that I planted Monday are sprouting. I guess those misty rains we had did them some good. And I do believe one of my hollyhocks sprouted.
This evening we went to Home Depot. They had some nice plants, but we are so "into" starting our own plants this year that we didnt buy any flowers at all. We got an orange bell pepper and a lemon cucumber. Yall ever tried that one? It is suppose to be the color and size of a lemon when it's ready. We did get some seed packs....the purple zinnia, 4 oclocks, a pretty red colored marigold and some cat grass that I will grow for my baby Thomas. This picture is for Reba--of course I loved your cat lovers blog the other day.
I have 3 cats, but Thomas is my youngest and we call him "mamas baby". He answers, too. Oh this little boy loves catnip. He goes into escasty and rolls around, sometimes rolls himself off the couch onto the floor.
This weekend we will tackle half of the front bed. Its cleaned out, but some shrubs need trimming and we bought some Miracle Grow garden soil to help amend it. There is a foxglove there that is very happy so we want to try some more. Wayne has the seeds started because a full grown foxglove at walmart is $10!!!!!!!! My goodness, you can grow a hundred out of one seed pack.
It's hard to believe May is almost over. We have done a lot of work in the back yard. We are still putting out seeds for sunflowers and zinnias. We bought this coneflower at the Farmers Market. Its name was Mango Purple. I see the purple, but not the mango.
We made a bed on one side of the pool last year so we are working on the other side this year. We had some good dirt left over from the raised bed, so Wayne put it here. I have Fruit Smoothie Zinnias, sunflowers, malva, dill, butterfly weed and a lemon balm planted in here. My main flower for this bed will be hollyhocks. It is in a good sunny location. I went ahead and planted the seeds right in the dirt. What a surprise I will have next year when they bloom. I also sprinkled seeds of yellow and orange cosmos in here. Maybe I will get lots of butterflies.
The beans in the raised bed are growing so fast. We hope to make another raised bed later this summer..
I first met a purple aster last year in Yardgranny's garden. I fell deeply in love. Then I happened to find 2 on clearance. They did nothing last year but now are blooming. I planted it beside a yellow rose to experiment with the colors. I LOVE it. I have planted a bright pink zinnia on the other side of the rose and moved a purple iris behind it. Next year I should see some new color combinations.
This is my first hollyhock bloom this year. Its hard to tell in the pix, but it is a cherry cola color.
The next 3 pictures are beside my drive way, kinda in a partially shaded area. There are shrubs (which bloom in the fall, maybe a type of camillia), a large camillia in the corner and it has a big tree that over hangs it. It is a nice place to sit and rest but boring. I potted up some plants because it is almost impossible to dig holes with all the roots. I have added some statues and a bird bath. Wayne put me some dirt and compost over the area to try to improve the soil. There are a lot of annuals planted but are small still. I have zinnias (of course), marigolds, cosmos, salvia, and I am adding in some iris divisions.
Any of yall have an area like this, that you know has potential but it's just not "there" yet?? I know when the annuals fill in it will look better. Wayne wants to put pavers in front of the bench and that will be nice. I would love a vine on the bench, but it is just too shady and I need that little area of shade to sit and pet Kitty and think.
Saturday, Wayne made a raised bed for veggies. We planted beans, okra and squash. I am loving this.
Yesterday afternoon, I was very tired and determined to sit in my chair and watch TV and nap. Well, dont you know I noticed a house plant that needed to be repotted. One thing led to another and I ended up not getting in my recliner until almost 8 oclock last night.
For one thing, I needed to get my potato experiment started. I read once that you can root a rose by sticking a cutting into a potato and planting it. So, I had to try.
I will keep yall posted on how this works. I also planted some seeds, zinnia, malva, and sunflower. Now I am already anxious for them to come up. I have stuck a lot of Nasturtium seeds around in my beds and they are coming up nicely.
Here is our container garden. We have tomatoes, peppers, onions and shallots. Of course, I had to include a little pot of flowers.
This is a butterfly weed that we started last year. I havent seen a butterfly on it yet.
