There isn't a cure yet for the addiction we gardners have. No magic pill to swallow, no shots to endure, I am afraid that there is just time that we need, not to cure our addiction but atleast to subdue it a bit.
Time? You may ask? yes, time! time playing in our gardens, Time to let the dirt sift through our fingers, Time watching for destrcutive bugs that threaten out works of art.
So, when you find the symptoms are becoming unbearable, and you need to do something, anything before you explode. Just simply slip on your gardening shoes and find your trowels, Then slip out to you garden so you can take your medicine, the only medicine that can help relieve your symptomsl.

I have a disease I am afraid to say. At first the symptoms that are not very noticeable begin about March, as I begin to look through gardening books and magazines, old and new alike. Reviewing the secrets tips and tricks of the past that have worked oh so well, and always on the look out for new ones to add to my bag of tricks.
The symptoms in April become a bit more painful as now I start to recieve all the seed catalogs, each one trying to convince me to send my money thier way for the packet of seeds which will surely be an anecdote to my disease. For don't we all know that you can never have too many seeds!
In May my anecdotes begin to arrive one by one and now my disease is quickly becoming full blown and noticable to my family! They watch in mock horror and dismay as I set out determined to make sense out of my gardening shed, and dig out my pots and containers, tools, seeds and potting mix and somehow turn our family room into a make shift nursery! By the end of May, my dear hubby can no longer sit quietly by and watch his wife suffer with this disease alone, as I see him on nice days out there working up the soil for me.
I need to be careful with this disease it can take a set back by my old enemay Jack Frost if I should mistakenly plant my garden to early. In the case that this should happen I simply stay prepared with garden covers and pots to protect my little dears.
The summer months can turn hot and I have to be quite sneaky in my attack of the weeds. Enter the garden early in the day to snatch them out, and then again in the late afternoon when the sun sets for the day in the west. My symptoms keep me in the garden til the sun is too hot, but not for long my friends, I will come back
In the Early months of fall, What to my delighted eyes do I see, but the fruits of my labor, as sure as I can be. Bright red tomatoes, radishes and squash, dig the potatoes and carrots and don't forget the beans. Eating fresh from the garden, there is nothing better. When we have had our fill, I will start the canner.
Now the pantry is full, and my garden spot is covered in white. My disease is under control once again, that is atleast until about the time of the winds of March do blow!

I sometimes think that by Mother Nature not sending the rain when we need it she is playing a joke on us. Now, how could I veiw dry spells and the possibility of drought as a joke? Well, if you have ever watched me try to water my garden then you would be able to see the joke part of it too.
In the recent years I have tried different ways to water my garden. Of course there was the 1) "Bucket Brigade" where I carry bucket, after bucket of water to the garden, to water it. The problem with this method is two fold; a) the multiple trips that it takes with the buckets to the garden. b) If you should happen to have young plants, and you just "dump" the water on them you take the risk of breaking the young plants off. So, then I tried the; 2) "Sprayer" method. This one is where I attached a sprayer to my hose and stand by my garden for hours spraying water on it. The problems here; a) The amount of time it take me to spray my garden, mainly due to the size of my garden. b) You might want to make sure that your sprayer is either made out of a "rubber maid" type of material, or atleast that the sprayer is not just bare metal. This is because the cold water that constantly runs through the sprayer for so long becomes very, very cold. 3) Today, I have invested in and tried the "drip" method. This is where you use drip hoses that you run next to the plants base so that you are not just blasting the plants with cold water and possibly breaking them off or throwing them into shock. First of all let me apologize to all who are in favor of this method. I found that there are a couple of areas that you need to keep in mind is that; a) it is much easier to work with these hoses is to have enough of them to cover the length of each of your rows, b) Speaking of rows, it is also easier to work with these hoses if your rows are longer. Where as this year I have chosen to try the "square foot" gardening method, so my rows are quite short.
So, as you can see, my search for the best way to water my garden continues, Unless of course Mother Nature decides to have mercy on us and chooses to send us the rain in the right amounts and at the right times.

I wonder why weeds don't play fair? Yes this might be a silly question, but as I have spent countless hours in the hot sun, pulling and pulling weeds out of my garden, I have come to realize that weeds don't play fair!
1) Let the slightest frost come through and your whole garden is "burned" off and you get the joy and pleasure of re-planting your garden.
2) Why do the pesty bugs eat only our plants, but not the weeds? Really there are alot more weeds then plants, well especially in my garden.
3) Weeds roots can grow and grow and I could dig myself to china but not find the end of the root. But don't bump the seedling to hard or you are going to have to re-plant the seedling.
There are several more ways that weeds just don't play fair that I have thought of but I would rather not over load you all at one time.
am I the only who thinks up silly things like this? let me know if you do too. I am new to this web site and am always looking for good friends to chat with.
