Oh, this weekend would have been good, except on Saturday evening, my 11 year old decided that he should be able to ride his ten speen bike on a semi-busy road, without a helmet and without permission!!! The road is one that connects town to to out laying areas.. we live 5 miles from town, and there are still 20+ miles to go before the civilziation runs out. OH, and the speed limit is 35, when people pay attention!!! There is a gas station/mini mart about 1/2 mile, and he thought that since his grandpa told him he needs more expierence riding on city streets, before he will let him ride around town.. (why my sons thinks he need to ride around town is beyond me.. by he thinks that when Papa goes to town, he can ride his bike from where ever Papa is to the park and Papa can come and get him when he is done). So he tells his Papa that he is going to ride down to the store and back, Papa tells him to ask me, first.. does he? NO! My dad tells me, after they had been home from town for about 10 minutes that Kenny is gone, took off on his bike. And then he tells me about the whole riding in town/ getting experience by riding to the store and back.. So, I go and grab wallet and keys and sure enough!! found my son, riding, AT DUSK, in windy conditions that was blowing lots of dust into the road.. WITH OUT A HELMET!! and on the wrong side of the road!! NOW, this kid has have the safety training, but obviously it has not sunk in!! So, in trouble, in his room, restricted from riding for a while.
Ok, so Sunday comes.. starts out fine, till we go out to dinner.. As soon as we get in the vehicle, he starts in about why can't he ride his bike without a helmet?? So we pull over for gas at the above mentioned gas statoin.. and look at my dad, and ask him.. "can you please tell Kenny, about when his aunt Stephanie got hit by a car on this very same road??" then I turn to my son and say that is only one reason why I have hesitation about you riding on this road!!
Go ahead to dinner... Kenny won't drop the subject (he gets that from his dad!!) so he thinks that making the point about him "being a good bike rider" should make me, say sure go ahead.. well, NOT! I told him, you are not that good of a rider, if you don't ever wear a helmet!! and it is not you not being a good rider.. it is ALL THE DRIVERS OF ALL THE VEHICLES that I worry about!!! they may not be paying attention, they may not be able to see you!! sorry, but I don't want you hurt!! So, ok, we ended discussion for a while..
Then we get home, and Papa and Kenny are out mowing the lawn.. I go out to tell my dad something and see a green thing wrapped around the handle of the mower, not thinking much of it. My dad had hold of the mower, it was not running... well Kenny came out of the garage, Papa started the mower and Kenny took over.. well he was not even holding the handle....... not only that he stopps picks some thing up and throws it for the dog... as the mower gets farther away, then it dawned on my that whatever that green thing is-it is holding down the saftey switch!! MOM FLIPPED OUT!!! But not only was my son in trouble for that one, so was my dad!!! I put an end to it, but would my son let it drop?? NO!! he kept trying to come up with ways that he could just hold on to a string or rope or something that would break and release the safety if he happened to fall... Still nope, not gonna happen!!
So, that is why I say that I have more gray hairs today!!! I am not sure if my son has hit an early purberty... but something sure has taken his commen sence away.. along with his sence of safety and his sence of reason!!
Wow! It has been soo long since I have posted a blog on here. My computer had to get revamped and the person who did it took off my home pages.. which garden guides was one of! Then life was happening and things have been crazy!!
So, anyway, our garden is looking really good this year! The peacocks (from next door) has stayed until last week! Then they seemed to remember that we have a garden. So it have been all of on "peacock patrol" all during the day!! The like the early morning hours so far, so it is usually me and my bright green bath robe that has to go out and yell and wave my arms around.. with my hair is all directions...see I have not even been in the shower yet!! LOL
We have already been getting some good sized zuccini, and radishes!! Our corn did not get too tall, but has already flowered, and so we have been going and and "sexting" the corn plants!! My partner laughs when she tells me that she "sexed" the corn plants!! she did not believe me at first, that if you want the insure that you get corn, just go out and collect the flower seeds (or whatever they are called on corn plants) and sprinkle them down the plants so that the seeds go down in between the leaf and the stalk, but, we have cobs already growing!!!
The strawberries that I planted two years ago, have decided to give us some berries this year! Have had to harvest every couple of days!!! My dad, goes out and harvests, and then he makes strawberry short cakes!! yumm, yumm!!
I even noticed that my current has some berries!! Though at a foot tall the plant wont be able to give me too many berries at once.
We have pumpkins, cucumbers, zuccini, straight-neck squach, crooked-neck squash, onions, garlic, carrots, radishes.. lots!!
I was out checking out the garden this morning and making a mental list of this to try to get done this weekend, when I spotted a zucchini. I have posted a picture in my Greenhouse & Garden album. This is the biggest round zucchini I have yet to see, my cell is next to it to give a hint of the size! And then the end of it had seeds coming out! I am not sure if the peacocks had eaten a little of it and the hole was near the seeds, or what... I am not sure but really strange looking,, there is a picture of that also!
My sons football game Saturday morning 8 a.m. in a town one hour away. So the team was supposed to be there by 7, and as this is still the junior league it is all up to the parents to get there child there. Not a big deal, usually! Up at 5, Kenny up by 5:30, tried to leave by 6. Did not happen, left town my 6:15. My son has an overactive bladder, been going on for a few months now, so anyway, three stops on the way there. We did not make it to the field until just before 8! These games last about 2 hours! So about 10, game over, we lost 33-22. Oh well, the boys did really good! Some of us stop off at McD's so there goes another hour! And then another one to drive home! I was so tired! I don't normally take naps but that day I did! Then we did some shopping and went to the movie, Beverly Hills Chihuhuas.. it is actually a good movie! Lots of really cute dogs, but also a good morale story line!
Yesterday we had our last Show-N-Sell for Cub Scout Popcorn. I had it scheduled at Walmart from noon-five. Well just about like all the others it was just my son and me! But I guess that it ok! We sold over $400! He has reached his goal prize of a portable DVD player! It was cold and windy!!! And since it rained the day before I wanted to be prepared! Scout moto! We set up a tent and put the popcorn in there, borrowed a canopy from a friend and had the table and chairs under that! And guess what!! No Rain!! Just lots of wind! I was prepared for that also! I bought 4 bags of salt (for the water softener!) and rope, 2 bags went into the corners of the tent and the other two anchored the canopy!
It stayed windy until it was time to pack up, which was a blessing, I was not looking forward to try to roll the tent up with the wind blowing.
So I did not get anything done in the garden this weekend. And next weekend is not looking to good either! Saturday both football game and Cub Scout Conservation Clean Up Project! and then Sunday, going out of town for the night. Sunday night we are going to see Jeff Dunham!! and Monday my son has allergy testing scheduled. So at least I get a three day weekend! lol
GO WITH THE FLOW AND BALANCE THE CHOAS,, that has been my saying for the last month!
October 3, 2008! The garden is being prepared to be winterized, but with the rain the last few days, the outside okra plants have new flowers on them, and they are still producing okra's, so how to winterize around them? We already transplanted one into a pot and put in greenhouse to see if we can keep it producing over the winter, or at least for a another month or so. We transplanted a bell pepper plant also. So I will find out with time wether they like being dug up and put in a pot!
I just got done uploading lots of pictures!! So go and check them out!
My ideas for winterizing the garden are:
for most of the garden:
1. mow down weeds
2. rototill down about 4 inches
3. plant winter wheat
for the strawberry bed do a sheet mulch:
1. cover with mulch or manure
2. layer of cardboard
3. 1 to 1 1/2 inches of mulch or manure
4. cover with a leaf of straw
5. cover that with bird netting so that the wind does not blow it all away.
So that is what my ideas are, but actually getting time and resources are another thing.
I can't believe that it is already the 23rd day of September. Life is chaotic right now, and if it were not for my dad, my son's birthday party would not have had a cake, invitations or really anything except the bounce house/bungee run. My son turned 11 on the 18th but we had a party for him on Sunday, he wanted the bungee run from the inflatable bounce house company. So I did schedule that! But without me dad going to the store and buying the cake and frosting and party invitations, we would not have had a party. Then Saturday came, I was going to bake the cake that night. But my son had a football game to go to at 1:00, so ofcourse he dinked around and made us late! Which is something that I really don't like! But the stress of trying to get him ready was not good and so I got a migraine, granted not a full blown one, but enough that I was out of it that night. Then Sunday my son and I had to go and sell popcorn in front of Raley's Supermarket from 10-1, and his party was at 2. So sould have been fine. And it was because my dad baked the cake, got hamburgers ready to barbeque, had hotdogs ready also!! If it was not for my dad these last couple of weeks, I would have more gray hair and constantly stressed.
Other than that, I harvested the garden tomatoes, received a good 3 dozen!! some really nice big ones!! I was going to take pictures, and I just realized that I have not done that yet!! I will get them taken either today or tomorrow and post them. We also harvested our lone pumpkin. So I will get a pic of that also.
Well, I need to get back to work, just wanted to ramble for a little.
Ok here goes out of the 8 herbs that I entered in four took first place, one second (oregano), and three superiors!!
My fiance entered in the biggest veggy contest and her 2 zuccini both got second places. Her speghetti squash and ocra got ribbons, but did not place. But that is ok!!
My computer is being really slow!! It took 15 minutes to put pictures in a forum post so please go and check out the post in Over the Garden Fence titled the same as this blog. There are pictures there.
Well I took off into the garden this morning before work and snapped some pix. I have some of them already captioned but will working on getting the rest captioned today. There are a few pix of the greenhouse, a few of veggies and a lot of weeds!! lol we seems to have more weeds then plants! We have been so busy lately that we have not been albe weed to much. But I say just as long of the veggies are growing also, the weeds are ok for the moment. Mabye I will learn something in the Master Gardening Program to help keep the weeds at bay! Well I need to go and get some data entry done at work.
Talk to ya all later,
Have a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend!! I will post pix of my herbs and my fiances veggies that we entered in the fair later.

I purchased a FujiFilm FinePix digital camera. So far I am loving it!!! I can put it on the "flower" close up setting and take awesome pics!! I love to take pictures where the "flower" is in detail and the surrounding area is out of focus. I think I finally found the camera for those kind of pictures! Go and check out the pics in my album, the first one is taking with my cell phone, but the rest are from this weekend with my fuji!! The details are amazing!!
Thanks to Ed, who runs the Farmers Market in town I am going to be attending the program! He gave me a scholorship through the Farmers Market! I wrote in the "Over the Garden Fence" forum about it, titled Master Garden Program!
