I was going to write about what got done this weekend, but, I'm moping, instead. Yesterday my lawnmower quit while I still had most of the front yard to cut. I took the air filter off and gas came pouring out. So, I left it open so it would dry, and pushed the mower under the eave of my house-Not supposed to rain until late tonite-Well, around 2:00 it started raining-2 inches to be exact-mower is ALL wet now!
Was going to wash some clothes-water on the floor under the washer (NOW what!). When I had the mouse problem, Pete pulled my dishwasher out some (unbolted it), and this weekend, when I opened it, it almost fell out on the floor-He hadn't bolted it back in place. So, I start to unload it and the dishes were dirty. Mmm, I thought I had turned the washer on. So I start it again-and it's not making much noise, so I open it-NO water in the tub. (Now what?). Also, my car has automatic lights, and I've been noticing that sometimes they "click"-What the heck does that mean?? This just started, too.
So-the lawnmower, the washing machine, the dishwasher and my car need attention-I'll probably have to throw money at them-oh, and Peanut is scratching up a storm again-so he'll be in the vet's office again for another hundred bucks! I hate washing dishes-yuk!
Yesterday evening, moving things around on the back patio, I was being eat up with mosquitoes-They are Horribly BAD recently-I lit the citronella candles and sprayed me with OFF!, and found a can of Yard Guard. Haven't used that in a long time, though I have used some other brands-so I sprayed the patio area-AND Wow-instantly I was transported back to when Clint was 7-8 years old and had a yard full of ittle boys playing on the trampoline at dark. I used so much Yard Guard back then I should have bought stock in that company! It sure made me lonesome for that Little Boy with pockets full of snakes and turtles, covered in mud with buckets of crawfish and polly wogs and smelling like a wet dog ( or maybe the dog smelled like him-I never was sure...) :~( I just miss him. Funny how 'smells' can bring back clear memories!
FINALLY, the glider is painted. I still have to coat it with sealer, and this is a little more blue than I bargained for-but I think it will do!
I spray-coated the underneath with pruning spray! If you read the can, it waterproofs and seals all kiinds of things-it is rather tarry, though, until it dries... AND........The Bird Has Bloomed!
There are a couple in the forums under "What's In Bloom" And, I wanted to show you my squash! All sumer long I have had virtually NO squash-was going to pull this one up, and NOW it wants to produce! Hope they get big enough to eat!
And, I have tomatoes, too!
Check the forums-I'll have a few pics here & there-HAVE A GREAT DAY TOMORROW! Hope the sun shines on you!
Wow-I've had a lot going on! Yesterday morning I went to Tractor Supply and got bird seed. Stopped at the Dollar Store and got house cleaning stuff. The shrimp guy was on the corner (hurray!), so I stopped and got 10 lbs. cause that's all I want to handle at a time-THESE ARE GORGEOUS!! Clint & girlfriend will be coming in the first of December and this gave me 4 packs in the freezer-Not enough-I'll have to get more .
Came home and took care of these-of course I boiled some for me-h e a v e n! Then Petey called me-he got a new deer lease this year, and need items to furnish it (dishes, pots, bedding, etc.), so there were a couple of garage sales in my neighborhood and JACKPOT! Well, I did get a few things for him-some dishes, a pot, a new computer chair in excellent condition, BRAND NEW sleeping bag, cutting board, collander and an electric roaster that will cook an 18 lb. turkey-ALL FOR $17.00. They also had a real nice patio set with matching chairs & umbrella for $35.00! I hesitated about it-came home-looked at mine. My umbrella has flown across the yard many times and is kind of CrOoKed, and the glass top got broken a few years ago, and was replaced with sheet metal and I thought-Heck-I'll give him my set to take to the camp, and I'll buy that one! I called the lady back late yesterday PM-she still had it and asked which one I wanted. Which one?? She's got another with a sofa! We're going to get them this afternoon!
Then, I came home and put the first coat of BLUE on the glider-and kept having to shove Motley away-I am surprised she doesn't have Blue stripes on her! After we all (the dog got involved, too) had some blue on us, I picked 14 more peppers before coming in & went to Petey's house and stuffed them.
I have a few things to look at -the hummers are still here-not as many-I still have about 8 or so. They will be leaving soon I am certain. The Bird of Paradise is starting to bloom-I'll post another picture when the full bloom is out
The Night Blooming Cereus had a bloom this morning:
This last photo is for Reba. This ivy has been growing on the side of my house for a couple of years-it survives the winter, and just keeps growing. It was a piece of your average,, ordinary Pothos! It is very happy there!
Shortly after my other blog this morning, the rain let up-so I went to the store to get my chicken for gumbo. As I was leaving the store, Lo & Behold! The sun came out! I put my groceries up, and went outside to empty containers with standing water, fertilize some plants, prop up the ones that fell over, and I kept being 'buzzed'. Now, I knew I had a few hummers, but when I turned around and looked at the feeders-They were EVERYWHERE!
I got my camera and went back outside and just snapped and snapped until the camera said 'whoa, battery low!'. They were coming from all sides-Just everywhere! I counted 10, but there may have been as many as 15. I have 2 feeders at the house, and one under my shed. It was amazing! More pictures in "My Photos", and in the Hummingbird Forum. "Oh, and the gumbo is Great!"
Get out of my way!
It's 3:30 now and they're still at it! Appears our rain has stopped for a while, but it will be back-the 'swirl' is to the northeast of us now.
It's been raining since Friday, and is supposed to rain all week. Soggy, soggy yard. Yesterday was the anniversary of Hurrican Ike and our major flood-Now we are watching the river again. The rain is slow, drizzly, and then it pours, then it slow drizzles again, so things are draining, but the ground cannot absorb any more water! And here I sit, wanting to make a gumbo (several days of rain makes a cajun want gumbo!)-and I have NO chicken! How did that happen!?!
The hummers have been especially busy these last 2 days. I have 6, I think, or maybe more-they're everywhere! And the regular birds have been in a feeding frenzy too. I think it's the low pressure system right over us that has them feeding heavily-Do they know something we don't? Right now, with a fast drizzle falling, all of the feeders are crammed with little birds, and the PIGS are on the ground. With all this rain, I can't paint my new glider! I am so anxious to do that!
Yesterday, I picked 14 bell peppers, again-and stuffed 10. After this rain marathon, I will have LOTS more to pick. I just can't believe how many I've made this year! And, my little tomato plant that I cut back in the middle of the summer is doing well, and I've counted 7 tomatoes on it! One eggplant has become infected with something that ruins the fruit before it is large enough to pick. I cut it way back, hoping to save it, but no dice. The other one, however, is carrying on. I have ONE cucumber plant that has survived (I planted a few weeks ago). It's not doing too much, so I think in between rain showers, I'll dose it with fertilizer. In fact, I think I'll dose everything with fertilizer! I went through the seed box and have found lettuce seed, radish seed, and several packets of flower seeds we can start in the fall here for spring bloom. Need to get in the mode for doing that too!
I should be cleaning house-now is the time, since it's raining. Think I'll take a nap, instead!

Let's not forget to take a moment today to remember Sept. 11, 2001, the people who lost their lives, and the day that changed all of us. Let us not forget, either, that FREEDOM DOES NOT COME FREE. Only 2 people have ever given their life for you: Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

I planted a whole pack of seeds marked "Green Envy" this spring, and none came up. Yesterday, I found this blooming on the same stalk as the pink ones-Figure that out for me!! I understood that the flower was supposed to be a big one, too, and this one is not. I'm confused!! Oh, Oh-I'm going to have another Bird of Paradise bloom, too! Maybe even 3-it's too early to tell if that's more leaves or another flower! Stay tuned!
The butterfly did not make it. When I got home, all I found were wings and a shell. The ants had eaten it-and something got to the cocoon, too. Aw, it was so Close!!
I have to tell you about this. Clint called me yesterday very early-He sounded kind of down, and tired. His first words: " Well, we found blood". Blood?!? You found Blood???? My mind is zooming I'm thinking-He's been feeling bad? He went to a doctor??? or Was there a shoot out at work? Did someone try to break in his house? Did someone get lost? You think all KINDS of things. I say: "Blood? What are you talking about?????" He calmly says, "OH, I shot a deer." "WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THAT FIRST?????" They couldn't fiind the deer. Good Grief!!! He's 25 and still making me crazy!!!
I've got some new stuff for my yard-A windmill (NRA auction item), a little angel(EOY clearance),a large, wooden oblesik (on sale at Lowe's-reg. $60.00-I got for $25.00!), and a real nice large glider from a roofing company that I do a lot of notary work for. It was a trade off! Love, love, love it! I am painting it a sort of deep, Caribbean blue (called True blue). Will have a picture when I'm through!
I happened on this by chance, and have been watching the progress for 2 hours, and still no "free" butterfly-but it won't be long!
I have another cocoon not far from this one that I watched being made. Kind of like the worm scrunched himself up in an elastic shell. I watch it every day to see what happens next!
It has been kind of 'wormy' in my garden. I am amazed at this cockscomb-I have never had one make this many heads on one plant!
You can see all the worm chewings! They're eating up my zinnias, too! And the pentas that is planted near here, too!
I got some new yard stuff:
I have a few more pics in my album, and in the butterfly section and also 'Garden Decor'. I found several little cantaloupe on a vine I was fixing to pull up-Planted old seed, and though the vines came up, they are not in a good place, but Lo & behold-there's little fruit on it. Hope they get big enough to eat. I have pulled up all but one squash plant(it is safe ONLY because it has 2 squash on it), and trimmed up the eggplant, pulled up some of the old, ugly zinnias to make way for the volunteers that are everywhere!
Hope everyone has a safe and Happy Labor Day! I sure love 3 day weekends!
Later Gators!
OH! P.S. - I like this pagination stuff! I had 3 comments about the hummers I hadn't even seen! Thanks, Guys!
Yesterday PM they were in full "fight mode". I had about 6 and took lots of pictures-Unfortunately, not too many came out good. After playing with my camera a while, I found an automatic feature that would have worked better. If they are on the attack again this evening, I will have better pictures.
There is another feeder that you can't see just at the far right side of the picture. I wish this one had come in clearer.
Ouch-September-the start of the months with "R" in them (grrrrr. chatterrrrr, brrrrrr) The COOL MONTHS. Well, for a lot of you-Our cool comes and goes. This morning-67 degrees! Nice, cool, NO humidity! It won't last.
Yesterday pm, while sitting outside with my adult beverage, it was a tiny bit cool, Very Calm, and cloudy-And our clouds are part of (can you believe this?) the hurricane system in the Pacific that is headed for Cabos San Lucas. Strange-big hurricane, that one! So far we-and I include the east coast-have been fortunate NOT to have to deal with a direct hit, or even a threaten in some places. However, more will develop, I am sure. I also heard that this system will NOT bring any rain to the L.A. area where the fires are-Let's all pray that it changes it's course a little, and rains on L.A.-don't you think?
Sunday I picked and stuffed 14 bell peppers. Off of 3 plants. Some were not real big-but were starting to turn red already, so I picked them all, trimmed off the disfigured ones, and where there were too many on one branch, I trimmed some of them hoping to make the ones left Bigger. My Angel Trumpet is losing leaves, and showing no buds. It will do this around this time of year, and then just be One Giant Bloom-but this year, I'm not sure.
I have 5-6 hummers now, so migration has started-If I am standing near a feeder, they just buzz around me.--And my Dang, little One-Eyed cat caught one yesterday! I moved one table that had some plants on it away from one feeder, and will probably have to move another. I only had cardinals (I counted 9) at my feeder last night. As I said, the weather was a little strange-No doves and NO pigeons.
I am seeing quite a few butterfiles, lately. They are laying eggs all over my passionflower-which has bloomed very sparsely this year, but is very big and lush.
