Well, its a VIRUS , but that didn't rhyme.(?sp?) Anyway, I cleared out all the cucumbers and squash and what mulch I could and bagged it all up to go to the dumpster at work. A co-worked told me he had that problem a while back, and he used a strong solution of dish detergent and water and it stopped the virus. Hmm. I was told to us Jeyes Fluid, but I don't think that's available in the states,HOWEVER...after thinking about that, I vaguely remember my grandpa using Lysol in the yard sometimes (maybe just to wash our flea bitten hounds? ), but I know it was on the shelf with his sprays and fertilizers. And Jeyes Fluid is a disinfectant. Went looking for Lysol in the brown bottle (remember?)and can't find it. Sooo, I mixed up "lavender" smelling Lysol and dish soap and sprayed the heck out of my dirt, and whats left of the mulch! My garden smells so clean now (lol)! Going to let it sit a day, add some fresh soil, till, and re-plant!
Went to Lowe's and found some nice looking cucumber plants and one squash plant-so I'll try again. On the better side!! My tomatoes are doing wonderful-I pick 4-5 a day now (off of 2 plants), and lots of bell peppers again (there was a lull for a couple of weeks), hot peppers, and eggplants going crazy! I planted my okra this morning, and watered some of my plants, and the main garden.
I got a nice surprise this morning, also! I got a plant from Vicky Manson, one of our GG's that we had talked about-And it was packaged really nice!! So, I got a new plant, too!
Got to eat some lunch- and maybe get a nap?
Later, Gators!

I went home at lunch today, which I rarely do, and checked my sad cucumber vines. They are getting all mottled, now. Mildew? No, A Virus? Googled cucumber viruses and there it was! That's the problem with my squash, too. They're planted in the same bed. AND this virus can also affect, Tomatoes, petunias, snapdragons, canteloupe, gladiolas, AND I HAVE ALL OF THOSE planted within 10 feet of the cucumber bed!! I have to disinfect my pruners, and my tools and wash every thing near them! Ripping it all out this pm, including the mulch. Putting in bags and putting in the dumpster. Gonna have to start over. This was my worst year ever for cucumbers! I'll be really sick if this spreads to everything else! I walk in the garden and brush against these plants, and then go to another bed, and do the same thing, and the cats and dog are in the gardens and brushing up against every plant! Ug!

My vegetable garden has really taken off-and I'm trying to keep up! Yesterday I smothered down some of those little ol' eggplants -cut up about 10 of em and had 2 qts to put in the freezer. Still have LOTS on the 2 bushes I have. Tomatoes are taking off, and my vines are already starting to die back-but I planted another round! Bell Peppers are having their 2nd wave of crop to pick. My snap beans are blooming-again! Started preparing ground for my okra. Cucumbers and squash are a real disappointment this year. I'm gonna have to replant and hope they survive the hot summer.
FLOWERS!! One Big Beautiful gladiola-I have another in bud ready to bloom by Sat., I hope. My MOONFLOWER is blooming. I got seeds from a neighbor down the road last year, and planted 5-6 in a pot. ONE came up, and it is growing beautifully, and starting to bloom! My scarlett runner bean is starting to bloom, but barely vining. First time for me, and I have it in a container, so maybe that's the slow start?
My angel trumpet is loaded with blooms and smelling up the yard at night. Rose of Sharon are in full bloom, the crepe myrtles are starting to bloom-I have white, pink and purple. Of course, the daylilies are still going strong. Zinnias are blooming, begonias are blooming, petunias and my snapdragons are hanging on. Roses are blooming, though sparsely now, except for the pink "old timey" rose-it blooms all summer. Shrimp plants are blooming, and a few others-oh and Salvia-Red & blue-for my hummers. AND MY BIG SUNFLOWER!!
We haven't had much rain, either, and not much in sight. My water bill is gonna be high! It was calm and cool yesterday evening, but I was too tired to do much, and I had to take care of the eggplants before they go bad!
Until I catch up!! Later Gators!
May 27, 2008 | 10:18 AM PST
I have a lot to do when I get home today, so I'm gonna make my notes now. Sunday, I had one gladiola start to bloom-Pure White-Beautiful-I took some pics -AND NO BILL, Clint did not show me enough to get them where I want them to go! But I WILL make that happen! I am steadily picking 2-3 tomatoes a day-Big, beautiful ones!. Starting pulling up snap beans, and don't you know, the ones left are blooming again!! Darn, I have a bumper crop going. My cucumbers are giving me fits-turning yellow as if its the end of summer. I've watered and limed and fertilized... I'm ready to pull them up and start over. Only picking one cuke a day-last year it was 7-8 a day! My eggplants are loaded with lots of ichibans (small, but they'll have to do!). Bell Pepper has slowed down, but still producing. My petunias are starting to flop over, zinnias are sparingly coming up and blooming (I've always had loads of zinnias, too) They're off this year also.
Work to do! Will have to finish cutting my yard and weed eat this pm. Then I have to fix the fence so the kittens won't go next door to visit the PITT BULL! Mm? Maybe I'll fix the fence first!
LATER GATORS!!

As I write this, my Flyboy is on his way back to base. He will not be back before he leaves for Calif. Me & Peanut (the dog) watched him drive away and we both cried. I'll have crying jags for about a week (usually). Well, God didn't give us our children to keep; I keep telling myself that...
Anyway!! Memorial Day adventures! Pete, my honey, has been feeling kind of bad the last few days. We had several people over to his house on the river (his house is much bigger, and he has a boat!) to BBQ and my son cooked (well, I did some!). We had all eaten, and was talking about dessert, when one of the girls yelled for me to come upstairs quick, but I had already heard him fall. He had passed out -WAY low blood pressure even after 3 readings. We spent 2 1/2 hours in the emergency room - NO boat ride, and no dessert. He is ok-just has to monitor his BP for the next few days, and check in with reg. doctor.
Up to that point, we were having a really good time. And of course, everyone left in a hurry, and we have all this FOOD left over!!! The YAPPERS are in-they came over this morning before my son left, and they'll be in and out this week-will take my mind off Clint going to the other side of the states...for now.

Hi Guys!! Been a little busy-My Flyboy came in for the long weekend, and the dogs and cats are wild and rambuncious and NEVER STOP! Run, Run, Run, Jump, Jump, Climb, Bark, Hiss, BARK, Bark! At least it's not quiet! Now that Clint is in, IF I can pin him down long enough to show me the shortcuts to post my pics, I will have Lots of New STUFF!
I am now picking on a regular basis - bell pepper, hot pepper, cukes, eggplant, and so far FOUR (4) tomatoes!! Large, good ones! Pulling up the beans, I started yesterday, but some still have a few tiny beans and a few blooms-I might get another mess, but, I'm gonna plant again in the fall, so they'll all have to go. Okra going in next week.
SOOO-for Memorial Day weekend. Since my son will soon be leaving for California, we're gonna have a B B Q with some friends and family on Sunday. We're doing ribs, pork steaks, chicken, deer sausage, potatoes with onions on the grill, rice dressing, BBQ beans, FRESH cucumbers and tomatoes, potato salad (?maybe not if we do potatoes on the grill), garlic bread, some sort of melon AND Peach Cobbler!!! (See, it's ALL ABOUT FOOD!) Oh, yeah--and a few beers-a few margaritas (maybe daquiris? we have some strawberries!) and of course, my wine. My 'honey' lives on the river and FINALLY got the motor fixed so we're gonna ride down the river on the pontoon boat.
YOU ARE ALL INVITED! PLEASE RSVP! (really, if you're down this way!! pm me!)
IF I'm not back on before Memorial Day-Have a good one-REMEMBER OUR TROOPS ---- And if you don't support them- Feel free to stand in front of them!!
May 20, 2008 | 10:39 AM PST
I received an e-mail from my brother in Colorado that they will be coming in to visit this weekend, and staying for a while. His daughters are 14 & 16 and NEVER shut up-they just yap and yap and yap-So, I call them the "Yappers". In case you haven't noticed, I give just about everything a nickname (my son's 2 dogs were the "dammits"-Dammit no, dammit stop, dammit get down, etc.), my son and 2 nephews are the "chick magnets", I have a bird house nicknamed the bird church (I got it at the church benefit-it has a cross on top), my neices are the "Yappers", there is a certain group of people that visit at my friend's house who lives on the river that I call the "boat people". Ya gotta have fun with names, don't you think? If I give you a nickname, it means I like ya!
Anyway-I PiCKED MY FIRST TOMATO YESTERDAY!! It was a small one, but perfectly round and perfectly red. It was hidden deep in the bush, I almost didn't see it. Picking one or two cucumbers a day, now-But my zuccinni!! Starting to get blossom end rot! How should I add calcium? I will need a fast acting type, so lime won't do. Crush up some of my calcium pills???? I can do that! Guess I need to go to the garden center.
Lunch today-Smothered okra and shrimp from the seafood shop on the corner, and fresh cucumber salad! :)
May 18, 2008 | 6:19 PM PST
A busy "working" weekend. Mowed the lawn-Weed-eated the lawn-sprayed the canna's, yelled at the cats (they broke ALL of the daylilies around the oak tree-learning to climb the tree-GRRR). They'll grow back-Just no more blooms this year. I took some pictures, but I'm too tired to play with trying to put them on the computer-it takes me a while and I'm too tired to focus.
I picked 3 cucumbers this weekend!! Just finished supper, Smothered liver and a bowl of cucumber/tomato salad! (tomatoes from the store..) 1 Small bowl of beans-they're almost over - Zuccini ready probably tomorrow. I've picked 2 eggplants, but they sure are small. Guess I'll have to settle for these Icky's!! MY GLADS ARE ALMOST READY TO BLOOM!! Some of them, anyway. If I can keep the rambuncious cats out of them! I had a pot with 3 good sized begonias in them-Half broke off! I could pinch their little heads off!!!
Cutting out early this pm-Got to clean the mess in my kitchen and MOP!
LATER GATORS!!
May 16, 2008 | 11:34 AM PST
I keep playing with this-I may just get it! My new pics have granddog, the Angel Trumpet, the Pitcher Plant, and my Grandma's chicken. My grandma had that chicken for as long as I can remember. When she got too old to clean her own house, I would do it on weekends. I would complain about that UGLY chicken, and how it had "feathers" broken off and it was so hard to keep clean, and she would laugh, and say, someday you're gonna like that chicken. And you know, I wouldn't take a Thousand Dollars for that Chicken!! She'd like it in the flower bed.
May 16, 2008 | 7:32 AM PST
Hey Ya'll- check out my new pictures I somehow managed to get on the site via my office computer. The White Cat in the wheelbarrow was my Little Oreo who disappeared last October. He was my entertainment and joy. This cat was more person than cat, and I tear up just typing this. On his left hip (the one he is laying on) was a perfect round black spot about the size of an Oreo cookie-hence his name. I still look for him every day.
The others are one of my new kittens, my mandevilla vine, and my son and nephews. They call themselves the chick magnets... And ....I think it's true! I'm working on the garden pictures (Don't look at the junk behind my Mandevilla!)
I'm working on the garden pics! I may have to enlist Bill for this!
May 15, 2008 | 2:07 PM PST
We had strong thunderstorms come through last nite and pushed my tomatoes over the Other Way this time! I straightened em up again-Knocked one bell pepper over, too. I'm going to have to do Major re-structure of staking them up. And they are soooo loaded with tomats!
I picked AND ATE my first cucumber yesterday. Almost didn't see it. Will have more by the end of the weekend, I'm sure, especially after that good rain. MMM with a store bought tomato! I counted 10 eggplant on one bush yesterday. They're Ichiban, which taste ok, and they're ok to grow,-but I wanted the Black Beauty which the store was out of-they're better for mmm eggplant parmesean! These will do-just takes more of em! Ok-playing with the picture icon thing-Try that later - My angel trumpet is starting to bloom with lots of buds- and it smells so pretty in my back yard. Rose of Sharons are blooming good, My glads are starting to put up flower stalks. Wal-Mart had bulbs marked down to 8/$1.50 so I got a pack. Will plant those this weekend & I'll have bloom all summer!
Had one sparrow in the "bird church" yesterday. Pretty Boy cat tried his hardest to climb the old metal basketball post to get up to it, Just couldn't do it. The kittens are growing and getting on things Higher UP, now. Sure is a lot of NO & DOWN being said at my house!
Check ya'll later-going get my hair cut!

Yep, It is both Bats & Martins. Didn't have very many this pm only about 4 birds and 3 or 4 bats-not flying together. This pm is windy and cloudy, so the weather has something to do with their feeding. Didn't have many birds at the bird feeder, either. Expecting rain-I hope.
Nothing like the show last nite. Kinda chilled this evening. Going to bed early-
Later gators!

Ok-my boss is gone for the day, so I'm gonna try this again! -- Last nite, right at dark, I could see over my neighbors house 15-20 birds (bats?) flying about 20 -25 feet off the ground-Zooming and darting about-then they came closer to my house, and lower to the ground, actually maybe 10 feet or less above the peak of my roof! Peanut was barking like crazy, and the 2 kittens were looking straight up "BIG-eyed". I swear they were birds, Martins, but this was almost too dark to see. And no sound! Are Martins still out that late? No sound. I don't think they were bats, but I do have 3 or 4 bats I see occasionally....MMM? Haven't had much problem with mosquitoes yet, but it is swarming season for termites. GET EM, BIRDS!! Bats? Anyway, I hope it happens again tonite-I'll try to take pics (a lot of good that does me!!)
Anyway, we picked beans again yesterday, and more bell peppers. Should have eggplant and zuccini by the weekend. The tomatoes are looking real good, and surprisingly, I don't have any bug problem (yet). My angel trumpet had 3 blooms yesterday, and my Morning Glory Tree had its first bloom, and has lots of buds. My hydrangea I bought for $1.00 at Lowe's at the end of summer is about 6 inches high and blooming! One BIG bloom.
Question for you East Coasters-My son has (which I am babysitting, along with the dog), several Venus Flytraps and one Pitcher Plant. I'm slowy killing off the Flytraps, and he had so many of them. One is blooming (these are very small plants), and I had to move them to stop the kittens from slapping em around. The Pitcher Plant is blooming also-small plant, 2 big blooms. Do they need full sun? Part sun? Deep Shade? I know I'm supposed to keep them wet-and I do (well not all the time, but mostly!) He wants to bring them with him when he goes to Ca. the end of June. I want to keep them healthy. Comments?
May 12, 2008 | 7:27 PM PST
I wrote a whole lengthy entry about bats and purple martins and all the new stuuf blooming in my garden and how I'm too stupid to get my camera and garden guides to work together and I'M TOLD SORRY YOU ARE NOT CONNECTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW DID I GET HERE ANYWAY!!!!!!! I'm going drink more wine and go to bed. I'll deal with this tomorrow!! Oh, And I love this place!
Later Gators~
May 11, 2008 | 6:16 AM PST
I have 2 more pics in my blog-but they're not the ones I wanted! Still navigating! I took pictures of the garden from different angles and the tomatoes up close-and my Red Parasol mandevilla that is FINALLY starting to vine good. I'm impatient and it takes time and reading and trying to get these pictures on-AND I have dial up, so I don't know if that's why it takes so loooonnnnnnnggggggg!
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY ALL!! And also to you guys who raise/raised your kids alone-
May 10, 2008 | 2:29 PM PST
i HAVE PICTURES! Not quite sure how I did that-but I did get some posted! One I doubled (???) Going in the yard with the camera-Will have more -and better ones tomorrow! Yippee!!
May 10, 2008 | 7:21 AM PST
I actually have a sign that says that in my flower bed. Haven't been paying much attention to my flowers-time to pull out the rest of the pansies and dianthus (do dianthus over summer? Here? In Hell hot muggy Louisiana?) Anyway-I've been pulling weeds, well, pulling GRASS from my flower beds, and trimmed the angel trumpet up from the bottom-afraid the kittens will chew on them. Pulled grass from the %#@!! cactus that my son brought home from West Texas about 19 years ago. I hate it, but it's his, brought it home when he was 5, and HE dug it up and moved it when we moved here 11 years ago, and it is pretty when it blooms, which it is doing now.
Put up 5 FULL qts of beans this morning. Makes a total of 13 qts in the freezer-My neighbor may get the next picking-Whew!
Got grass to cut today- and it looks like rain (YaY?!) My yard become swampy fast. Off to the lawnmower!
Later Gators!
May 9, 2008 | 7:39 AM PST
I think my tomatoes survived after all the wind yesterday. I staked and propped and tied and inspected. Boy-do I have tomatoes (yeah, I'm bragging). I talked with my brother and he said his green thumb is lost this year. He keeps having to replant, and I'm harvesting! I'm gonna have to make the drive(he lives about 20 miles from me) to see his garden-he's planted a LOT! With the price of groceries-I told my boss I was thinking of plowing up my whole back yard and planting a BIG garden. He said we'd have another hurricane. Scratch that.
Dog and cats are doing fine. They get along so good now. The kittens try to steal Peanut's dog toys, and he gets this frustated, "What?!?" look on his face, but he doesn't hurt them. And those cats are EVERYWHERE! I turned on the sprinkler in the beans and cats ran out . I have a bird feeder tray on the ground, and they sit in it waiting-Like the birds are really gonna come while they're there. They're climbing trees (somethimes too high), and still climb the umbrella, and they hide in the flowers. My only fear, is now they've learned the "pet door", so they can go in and out when they want-and they usually won't go outside unless I'm out there-BUT- at night-when the moths and other flying bugs come out, they want outside and run from me when I want to bring them in. Last week I had a very large owl sitiing in a pine tree-and I've lost kittens to owls before. I don't like that. But the little devils hide from me in the dark!
Re-potting house plants this weekend- Later Gators!
May 8, 2008 | 6:42 AM PST
Yesterday I found a good "stuffing" pepper at Lowe's, to plant along with my skinny ones, and I bought a "Heatwave" tomato to plant to take up where the others will leave off in July. Our summers are just too hot for reg. tomatoes. I picked 4 more bell peppers yesteday, and stuffed em with the rice dressing I had left from Sunday-sOOOO good!
The wind is so bad here! We had 26 mile an hour winds yesterday, and expect it again! This morning as I was leaving for work, I saw one of my big tomato plants had blown over/down! Yikes!! I got 2 stakes and hammered em in the ground and tied em to the cages around my tomatoes (plants are about 4 ft. high now and loaded with fruit!) Wind is blowing-OK that will have to do until I get home this pm-WRONG!! Backing out the drive I look and it had blown over AGAIN!! Ok-4 stakes this time (will have to make a bigger cage out of wire) Hope it holds...that plant must have 40 tomatoes on it!
I'm at work writing this and I need to get busy! -
Later Gators!!

Yesterday I had a large picking of beans. Put up 4 quarts again. Of course, kittens and Peanut helped-several beans had teeth marks on them. I have 3 bird feeders near my garden and the kittens are venturing out now, so they hide in the beans to watch the birds (the birds are still bigger than the kittens!) and I think they bite the beans because they're in the way! Anyway, its no big deal-wash em, and cook 'em!
I also have more bell peppers to pick. I think I'm going to try the garden center and see if they have any Ca. Wonder anywhere. Big Bertha is ok-but I still want my FAT peppers. Jalepenoes are making, tomatoes are loaded, but my cukes - they're slow, slow this year. Lots and lots of blooms, but very few cukes! We had 2 or 3 little cold spells after I had put them in the ground, do you think they're just having a hard time coming back? They're vining good--don't know! I always have lots of cucumbers off of just 2 or 3 plants-I may have to replant!!
I've got a spot where I lost a tree due to Hurricane Rita 2 1/2 years ago that still hasn't grassed over, and I believe I'm gonna put cantelope(? spelling?)there. They were $3.00 for one at the grocery store! Unbelievable!

I posted this under vegetables, but maybe I'll get some play here. I read an online article about removing almost all of the leaves from a tomato plant to get bigger yield of the tomato. Supposedly the plant will put more energy into producing tomatoes rather than supporting the leaves. (note-it did not say to remove ALL leaves). Heck, tomato worms will remove lots of leaves! Anyway, my tomatoes are heavily leafed this year and I have lots of tomatoes; I don't know about this! Anyway, could have bought the book for 39.95 and learned more. Anyone hear of this or done this?
May 4, 2008 | 6:58 PM PST
Today was kind of lazy-I'm so tired all the time-Need to go the doc-maybe my meds are off (if I'd remember to take them, it might help!) Anyway! I had 4 large bell peppers "Big Bertha", and I stuffed em today! Never planted Big Bertha before, only California Wonder. They were good, but I have made a note-Thin long fruit-does not take very long to cook, like CA. Wonder (still prefer that one) Also, this year when I planted my snap beans, there were no Kentucky Wonder on the rack, so I planted Contender. Now, I have planted Contender before, don't know why I haven't in the last few years, because as far as I'm concerned the Contender are better!
Put my 2 blueberry bushes in larger pots-too late here to put them in the ground; will wait until November. I cleared a little bit of clutter from the garage and off the patio. Was walking in my front yard with my son's daschund that now lives with me, and my neighbor (GRR) and her PITT BULL came out of their garage and that Freaken dog ran after Peanut. I'm screaming and she's saying my dog's not vicious- Well, we got them separated before anything bad happened. Yeah, right-sorry Pitt Bull lovers-but I hate the breed!! And I hate living next door to one!! Don't know for sure, but I think that's where my Oreo (cat) went. I sure miss that cat!
Back to gardening - I have a multitude of buds on my Angel Trumpet-My Morning Glory tree has some flower buds on it -My hoya is starting to bloom, daylillies blooming, zinnia seeds coming up-My asparagus fern is blooming(!) petunias in, pansies out, grass is growing, Love Bugs are coming out (I HATE those little suckers!) No skeeters yet, but rain has been rare. RARE for here!! It always rains here!
Oh, and I got to eat some crawfish today-Just luv em!
Want to get to bed before 10 tonite!-Later Gator! Le Bon Ton Roulet!
May 3, 2008 | 7:34 PM PST
I feel so AHEAD of everyonE! Picked my second bunch of beans-good sized bowl this time-put 4 quarts in the freezer, cooked one pot full (no new potatoes, but good anyway!). Of course, cats and dog helped. Had to put the bowl on a pedestal so the dog and cats wouldn't run off with beans as i picked them. What's Up with that!! Littlle devils. Like kids-try and feed them a green bean when they need one! GRrr
Didn't go to the crawfish boil today as planned. My long time honey (don't even know if he is that anymore!) was too tired! WHAT!! Who's too tired for crawfish? Especially since we paid $100.00 fof the tickets to this thing!! I drank my $7.00 bottle of wine and watched the cats try to figure out how to catch birds. (And they weigh 3 lbs and 3 lbs, 2.oz now! Big Cats!)
And ate my new green beans and chicken with cream of mushroom soup. Will have a total of 5 bell peppers tomorrow. Making stuffed bell peppers after church tomorrow!! And then will call my Air Force son and rub it in!
Good nite all-and Later you gators!
May 1, 2008 | 6:12 PM PST
Took off early this pm to bring kittens to the vet, but he wasn't in today-SOOOO I went to Lowes and got muclh and compost to finish the flower bed on the West side of my house. Checked on my beans and decided I couldn't wait until Saturday and I picked a good sized bowl full, plus 2 bell peppers that are crying to be stuffed. Pulled up the radish going to seed (they make pretty flowers! Almost as pretty as broccoli flowers!)
Then I had to throw "little ugly" a zillion times for my son's daschund (Little ugly is his favorite squeak toy that is just plain UGLY)-Got the kittens out of the tree they climbed, then out of the umbrella (I closed it cause it's so windy-they climbed the outside of it to the top) Then they were in the bird bath...Now, we're in the computer room, which is also where Clint's (my son) stuff is stored until Uncle Sam gives him a more permanent home, so it is full of STUFF! After they knocked over the Mardi Gras decorations, and climbed on top of the dresser looking at the ceiling fan (oh boy!) , the dog chased them under the computer, and I lost everything I had already written!!
The garden is looking real good-forgot the camera--again! It is and has been so windy here, it's not fun to work outside. At least it's not cold. You guys that are North of the Mason Dixon line have some tuff skin to take your winters. I HATE WINTERS!
Daylilies here are starting their bloom, My irises are through. The Canna's are full of worms (can't spray with the wind so strong-and nosey kittens), roses are blooming, my Plumbago is Gorgeous! (sticky flowers on the kitten's feet) They walk around shaking their feet! My shrimp plants are blooming-the native hummers like them, and my Angel Trumpet is about 5 foot tall, putting on buds. Did you know that Angel trumpets are pollinated by bats? That's why they smell at night! Ok-that's why they smell BETTER at night.
I need to eat-and clean up. I will have to make a story about why I have my son's dog and how I came about with 2 new kittens (rescued from the animal shelter, thank you!) They're my family-although I do have 3 brothers and some neices and nephews. Well, 2 brothers I talk with, anyway.
Later gators!
