Hello everyone.........it is a sunny afternoon after a night of a bit of rain. Everything looked so nice and clean and fresh. Last evening I took a few pics of my bleeding heart.....as it is just beginning to bloom. I put them in my photos under spring 2010. Also took a few more of my tulips.........as they are nearing their last days too. My two money plants are blooming.....so took one of them as well. We are promised more rain later today or tomorrow. So I was outside digging dandelions and some other invasive stuff out of our lawn.......but as I looked around I decided that the invasive stuff might have to have a spray along with some clover.....so I think that is enough of the "on my knees" weeding for now. I should have planted my onion sets last evening to get a nice rain on them.....too wet now.. unless the sun really gets it dry this noon. Maybe by evening??? We will see.........well I better hang out my hubby's work clothes.......since the sun is out there...........Talk later........Enjoy your day! "Birdie"
I couldn't help but post this for you! Gorgeous! I hope that you don't mind. ~ Witt

water spring irises tulip Yes, it is nice and sunny here this morning.........but........I went down to the basement to check something in the freezer.......when low and behold there was WATER on the floor.......a bit of a noise and water was dripping off our softener or something.......hubby happened to be home to make a quick call and so he helped to get it shut off. We have to have our softener looked at........our last months water bill was out of this world, and so I guess there is something about the recycling that is not working........so had to clean that up and put the fan on it .....our dehumidifier bit the dust, so now we for sure have to get one so we don't get mold in our basement. I am so glad I went down there.....imagine being gone this morning, and come home to an inch of water or more in your entire basement? UGH..so Thank the Lord for that..........my tulip blooms are begining to fade.......but other stuff is budding, irises for one and bleeding heart will be full blown soon! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Spring........Enjoy everyone! Birdie
Apr 22, 2010 | 5:23 AM PST It's a sunny April 22nd here in Iowa. Walked with hubby at 5:30 this a.m. and so I am really kicking in high gear this morning. Already have his work clothes on the line and the sheets in the washer for the next hanging. It is a nice morning to walk and hear the birdies a chirping away saying "good morning" to us. I have to tell you of a bird experience of the other day. All of the birds took off in a flash and I wondered what had scared them off so quickly. A bit later I was doing dishes and looked out in the back yard.......there I beheld a hawk.......with something in his claws on the grass.......he was clutching this BIRD.....every so often I noticed some yellow underneath.....It was a larger bird.......so I believe it might have been a red flicker....they have yellow under their wings that you see in flight. About that time a little boy was walking down the alley along our yard and the hawk took off with it's prey in clutch.......never to be seen since! I feel for the bird.....but hey....I guess hawks have to eat too! I just think they could find something better! Oh well.....all in the realm of nature.......better scoot.....the sheets are ready to be hung in the sunshine........Enjoy your day.. God bless U all. Birdie

yellow tulips back pain
It's a sunny Saturday here in Iowa! It was a low of 34 degrees this morning putting some ics on the top of the birdbath.......now it is melted and the birds can drink and splash to their heart's content. My heart is heavy this morning for my son in law who is experiencing server pain in his back. They have tried twice to block the pain and neither one had a long term effect. :( Monday is an apt. with orthopedic surgeon.......hopefully they can find a path to treatment without doing a full surgery.. Praying for a good outcome to this. He is so busy this time of year.....getting baby calves and having to start field work.......plus working full time as well. So everyone has to help out as can best they can. It makes things tough.......but God will see everyone through! Waiting for a call from Dollar General to say the truck has come and then I can go to work. Hopefully it will come today. I noticed I missed a couple of my raspberry canes and so will go and remove those pretty soon too. More tulips have opened and are smiling with glee this morning........lots more yellow, a few red ones and a couple melon colored.......Ahhhhh the beauty of spring..........Enjoy the day all! God bless everyone! Birdie

Raspbery canes... rain......walk.....bike riding We were blessed with 6 tenths of an inch of rain last night and early morning.........ahhhhhhhh those April Showers to bring on the May flowers! Things look so fresh and greeen! Took a walk to the post office this afternoon and also took a short walk in the morning. Rode my bike for a short first ride for the season tonight. I need to keep that winter thickness off me.....now that spring is here. It seems the comfort foods of winter like to add a couple pounds and I want to get them tossed in the gutter as soon as possible..........walking sure helps....plus it makes me feel better too. Pruned my raspberry canes this afternoon and took out the extra leaves and tree seeds before they all sprout.. Somehow I like picked them up instead of pulling them OUT! HEHEEEeeeeeeee Well hope everyone has a nice evening.........it was a LOVELY DAY! God bless........"Birdie"
It is an exciting day at our flower garden....my first tulips and mini irises are starting to bloom!! :) It is so colorful and bright! I love those brand new blooms.......they are so vivid. I did post a picture of each in my photo section. I also got the planting itch......."I know....I know it is much too early.......but I wanted to JUST TRY a few nasturtiums and see if they might just come up.....I know it is a stretch and I saved lots of seeds for later.........but it was so warm today and I just HAD to plant ONE THING"! Have a good evening all and hope you are enjoying those blooms around your place as much as I am. Smiling........Birdie
Hen and Chicks are a great and easy plant........mine are looking nice again this spring. I have them around two of our window wells on the east side of our house........they do so well there! :) I really neglect them and they seem to love that "neglect". I got my first ones from my mom...she had them and said she would spare a couple.........well that was several years ago now and I have been replenishing hers every spring since then.. Hers do not get enough sun where she has them and Sunday in talking.......we decided to move them.....so I will go and do that sometime soon and put them in a sunny location so they can once again do well. I do not have anything blooming yet.....so I just have to admire my hen and chicks.
I did notice today that I have some sunflowers sprouting in my garden. There are too many.....so I will pull some and move some to where I want them when they get a bit taller. It is nice when they self sow and you do not have to sow them in the spring. Seems I always have enough to quiet my sunflower longing! Enough to feed the birds and for me to get enjoyment at the same time. I wonder what kind these will be? I am hoping for the one with brown or mahogany near the center and then the yellow.......Oh so pretty! Well this is a long blog.......better get to bed...........Enjoy your gardens and watch them sprout each and every day.. Such FUN! BIrdie in Iowa

tatted rain......fertilize photos April Showers bring May flowers....or so the saying goes........and it will be true here in Iowa ...as the rain is falling today....such a wonderful rain and gently falling too. I had fertilized my perennials in hopes of the rain they were predicting.......alas they were right! So my perennials ought to be smiling as they drink in all the goodies! I did notice my one rose on the south side of the house is really shooting nice leaves .....small ones but still it is only April! I love the smell of the rain.....grass should really green up now. It is chilly~~only 45 today and so I had to break down and put the furnace on to get the chill out of the house~~enjoyed some hot chocolate too. :) Now hubby made some popcorn and so we are enjoying that as well. Well tomorrow I will head for Coffee Break Bible Study and will be picking up two other ladies as well. I was so happy to receive a beautiful tatted doily from the one lady. last week....I pick her up each week. It is just beautiful...ivory colored.. A nice rememberence of both my grandmas who tatted in their years here. I should take a picture and put it on my photos.......well no more tonight.......Happy gardening all..........Birdie in Iowa
Apr 4, 2010 | 6:26 AM PST It is the most beautiful Easter Sunday here in Iowa! Sun is shining and it is bright and no wind today either. It is wonderful to have a nice calm sunny Easter! We had so much wind the last days .......really alot of March was too of course.....that is the norm right? Scouted around in the yard and garden beds to see what else is new and coming up....of course I found some grass that was creeping in areas unwanted......so dug that out.......raked my yarrow and took the leaves out of there and tidied up my 3 primroses.....I hope they bloom this spring.....they were babies and did not bloom last year.......hoping for a bloom or two this year! I saw my poppy which i had planted last fall made it through the winter.......it really looks green and hardy.. I am hoping for a bloom or two from her too. Also noticed my lilies are all coming up.....some faster then others but I believe they are all up and growing. :) Pulled out some old verbena and noticed lots of new growth coming.....should have purple blooms from them. I like how they look well with the yellow coreopsis and black eyed susans. I have not seen the balloon flower coming up yet.......but hey........it is really early for that. Well I guess I have rambled on enough about my scouting the yard and beds yesterday........but hey~~ isn't that what spring is all about?? Have a wonderful Easter all of you..........Love to all.........Birdie

Good Friday Identifying plants..woodpecker..mourning dove Hello all :) Just got back from our Good Friday service and thought I would just browse around and look at some photos of all your lovely gardens from all over the country........so FUN to see them all and your families as well. I was so pleased to see our first mourning dove and also our first yellow bellied woodpecker........they were enjoying our bird bath and suet feeder. Also noticed a new little weed/flower that I have not seen before here. It is definately a creeper of some sort and I put a picture of it in Plant identification for those who are good at that sort of thing......I have a name in mind ....but u just check it out and let me know......then I will confess if I am right or not. HEHEEEEEEEe I see that one of my roses is really beginning to leaf out.....it is on our south side and the other is slower........close to the house but not as much sunshine. South is always first! Better scoot around some more........I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter........Love to all........Birdie
