Jan 27, 2010 | 2:46 PM PST I love the sunny day today.......even if it is kinda chilly.. It was nice to be out once again.....lots of snow everywhere.......banks are high enough for me.. this snow ought to last through the winter.......without needing anymore accumulation. Monday it was such a blizzard you could not see anything.... everything cancelled and no school and no travel advised and MANY accidents! I could not see across the street at times.. and we live in town.....so glad we stayed cozy and warm while hearing the howling winds blow outdoors. Gusts to 50 mph.....now that is quite enough of a wind........thank goodness only 2 inches of extra snow........it blew into huge banks.. Nope.....no gardening today.......but spring will be come again. Tonight we have a Women's Auxillary Hospital Soup Supper and hope to earn lots of dollars for the hospital needs and equipment. I have to clear tables and trays this time. No soup being made by me this go around.....nor pies! :) Love those hot soups this time of year don't you? Which shall I choose.....Vegetable..Chili..C hicken.. or Pea! Such decisons! Byeeeeeeee now.. Birdie in Iowa
Can you believe it? It seems like Jan is flying by so quickly....we finished 3 weeks of the new year already! Sunday and ready for another dark day. Seems we are either foggy or icy or snow and not much sun shining over Iowa. Many are without power from the ice storms of this past week. Maybe 2 hours from us......so we were blessed to not have that. Feel so sorry for them ...many shelters have opened to house them. My daughter manages a hotel and she is full of people from the towns around who are without and all the power people who are helping to get power back up. A huge thanks to all of the people helping those in need. I think of Haiti too and my heart breaks for the injuries and loss of life. :( Well it is time to go to church hubby says.......so I best get on the move.. Have a wonderful Sunday all. Birdie
It's about time to chat a bit. Today the weather warmed and it actually melted the snow off our deck railing........YAHOO! Sun was out and it was about 35 degrees! Yep.......guess it is our Jan. thaw. Had a nice day.......had Bible Study this morning........first since the holiday break.. Our daughter and I had lunch .......which was enjoyable for the both of us. We had a neat little coffee shop called Butlers....that we had a sandwich and salad and she had soup. Then it was time for getting some groceries and back home again. Did some laundry and slept for about 15 min. in the recliner.....now I am off to our Circle Meeting and Bible Study. Hubby is visiting our friend in the hospital .....so the day went.. Hope all is well with you all........Still waiting for my seed order to arrive! God bless u.. "Birdie"

White here in Northwest Iowa.....I know lots of places are white as well. Winds are howling and it is gonna really be COLD tonight and tomorrow. We are staying here.....had planned a visit to our daughter but hey.....who wants to freeze on the highways. All schools and activities are cancelled for today and tonight. Schools let out early yesterday.....so we are in our storm for 2010. Really drifting in the country....visibility POOR.....Interstate 90 closed in South Dakota....I know it will open as soon as possible.....winds are dying down out there so it will probably happen today sometime. I am going to bake some chicken for lunch. Might as well warm up the kitchen with some heat from the oven. Makes it toasty warm. Ordered some seeds from Jung and so I will await them. I like to pick up their discounted seeds for 1.00 if you order from 10 seed packets. I go for the discounted and hey.......they bloom as well as the spendy ones.......ordered some cosmos, zinnias, radishes, nasturtiums and I can't remember what more.......oh and some sunflowers and snap peas. Oh for a taste of those fresh snap peas right now........wouldn't they taste good with my chicken!! Have a good day all and stay warm and safe!! :) Birdie in Iowa

Good afternoon each and every gardener out there! Seems like spring is a year away instead of a few months.........sunny out today but brrrrrrrrrr so very cold! Tonight supposed to snow again.......I guess we are in for a snowy ...cold...winter! I remember when my daughter was born back in '69...we had one of these winters then.......we lived quite a few miles from the hospital.....so we would go and spend the night at my grandparents so we would be prepared if and when our baby arrived........we played lots of WAHOO with them........lots of fun memories .......and the night she decided to make her appearance.......we were there and that winter we had over 100 inches of snow....and flooding in the spring as well. We lived between two rivers and so when they both were out of their banks.......we could not get to town for groceries or anything for over a week.............those were the days! I hope we will not relive that kind of a spring thaw this year! Now I am not sure if any of you are actually interested in that story.......not sure how and where that came from. HEHEEEEEeeeee I better get the clothes out of the dryer and fold them........tonight we have a family visitation to attend. A man of our church died quite unexpectantly....only 79 years of age. Hard for the family.......went in for surgery and came out and had several strokes and died a few days later.........very unexpected.. Hubby did a military burial this morning with the VFW of another man who died of a sudden heart attack........only 76.....Makes us be reminded that are days are numbered that is for sure! God bless u all.......Birdie in Iowa
Good Day to all this Sunday Jan. 3rd.......in this brand new year! Isn't it exciting to start off the new year.........everything brand new and a clean slate to start off this month. We had a wonderful church service and dinner at mom and dad's and played some dominoes.......(I lost miserably)....but enjoyed the time even if I was down in the bottom. :) Mom always said....it's not whether you win or lose.......it's how you play the game! I am not sure about that........didn't probably play it so good........but enjoyed it anyway! Looking forward to leafing through some catalogs later tonight and trying to find just the best cosmos and zinnia seeds this year. I know they are easy one.......but I just love their look........butterflies do too.. Ok.......am off here and wishing you all the very best! "Birdie in Iowa"

Happy New Year everyone...from Sunny/white Iowa. I haven't been here in quite some time.......computerless for a bit of the time and just plain busy the rest of the time....Hope things are going to be more normal now that the New Year has arrived! We had a grand storm over Christmas...22 inches of the beautiful white stuff........it is very pretty.......but makes oh so much work for everyone........especially the cattle feeders......scooping snow out of all their yards and cattle bunks.........takes days to get it all finished when you get 20 inches of it....that is more than a normal snow storm. But we are all safe...many roofs collapsed with the heavy accumulation of snow on them....especially hog and cattle barns ........but also some right here in town. I feel so badly for those businesses. :( Today it is just so pretty outside with all of the snow.....so white and gorgeous. Although not many people would dare to say that aloud around here..it is true though........it is truly BEAUTIFUL! Supposed to get down right chilly tonight....20 below zero they forecast........we will have to wait and see. Hello to all after my long disappearance....Blessings to all of you! Birdie
