Hey everyone, I haven't been on in a while.... life gets in the way sometimes as you know! However, i am poking up my head as spring approaches and reaching out....need some input on tillers. I am thinking of getting one, and am wondering if any of you have used the Earthquake 98cc 21-in Front-Tine Tiller (has a briggs & stratton engine) and if so, what is your experience with it? there is only one review on the page i pulled up.... I have a small garden approx. 15 feet by 20 feet. Nothing huge. Seems silly to have it plowed so I thought i'd get a tiller instead..... thoughts? Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to spring!!
Does anyone have any experience with harvesting Red Zinger Hibiscus for tea? Need to know if the flowers will bloom large, and when I need to harvest them for the tea.... or, do I actually harvest the seed pod for the tea?? First time growing these.... not sure what to expect, so I am looking for all the info I can find!! Thanks!!

....since i was here! :) Lots been happening since I was here last....
I've been planting my garden, and also getting ready for the
Plant Sale next month (May 12)...trying to hurry before the grandbaby arrives
(May 1 we hope)! Also have another daughter, Ginny, who is getting married June
9….in Auburn, AL! So much good stuff going on! :)
Ok, I planted some green beans, lima beans, speckled
butterbeans, tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, potatoes, sweet potatoes,
cucumbers, radishes, arugula, and Japanese cucumbers in the garden!
Herbally speaking we have basil,
oregano, lemongrass, catnip, thyme, chamomile, lemon balm, all kinds of
mints....just having a blast in the garden
lately! SOOOO glad winter is gone!!
Anyone care to share what you have planted so far this year??
My first salad from the fall crop that was COMPLETELY from my garden! (except of course for Newman's Own Vinaigrette!) Even the sprinkling of nuts (Georgia pecans) came from my yard! There was: arugula, purple cabbage, romaine lettuce, spinich, swiss chard, turnip greens, kale, and collard greens - eight tasty greens chopped and tossed together, with CHERRY TOMATOES from my garden, as well. Wow! So cool to be able to go outside and "forage" for lunch! LOL! Next time I will try to remember to take a picture of it....lol. We (including Grandson Tommy) are going to Cagles Family Farm in Canton, GA tomorrow, and expect to have a great time! I hope Everyone has a glorious Fall Weekend! debbie :)

Another cool, sunny day! Got more bulbs to put in the ground later today, mostly
flowers again. You don't know how many you have until you dig up your yard and
move! lol Have a great day everyone!

It's gonna be another beautiful fall weekend in North Georgia! I plan to hit a fall festival with my grandson tomorrow, then work on putting some more bulbs in the ground...daffodil, tulip, crocus, star of david, and the like....all of these were brought from Marietta in the move and I never got around to putting them in the ground at the new place. However, I did finally get all the garlic planted, and some is already poking up! I've also been bringing some plants in, a few at a time - in anticipation of cooler weather to come! I don't want to be caught having to do them all at the last minute as I have in the past! And, it's so much nicer to have some organization! (I'm not good at that most of the time :) ) Everyone have a wonderful weekend! debbie

Just popped in to update my profile....I've been quite busy this year! What with buying a house and moving, and spending most of my leisure hours in the yard and garden (1/2 acre, sounds small but it's all open and sunny! And lots bigger than what i moved from) I am just blessed beyond words! It's been so hot, though, lately, that the cooler weather will be welcome. It's hard to stay outside too long these days - and I still need to get lots of potted things that moved with me into the ground! Need some rain to soften it up, too, so I can even dig holes for the plants! Well that's all for now, pictures hopefully later....everyone have a most blessed and HERBY day! debbie in Dallas, GA

daffodils cilantro kale arugula collards peas
Hello, all, I'm just curious what folks in other parts of the country (or even in my own city!) have coming up (if anything), either in the garden/field, greenhouse or on the window sill! I have collards, kale, and arugula up, as well as Cilantro planted in the fall is shooting upward. I will be planting sugar snap peas this weekend, and who knows what else, maybe some lettuce? I also have basil under the grow light in the house. I reworked the strawberry bed, and also saw buds sitting tight on the blueberries. Not to mention all the many, many other things tentatively poking through the earth! Daffodils blooming the past few days, my favorite flower! So glad to see a little warmer weather here. If you get a minute, comment and tell me what you've got planted, and where you are. Hope everyone has a great weekend! deb
I just sat down and checked my messages on gardenguides...wow....sorry ya'll. I really didn't think i'd been gone that long! LOL! Been so busy with the market i guess everything else just went out the window! My garden is doing well, considering i don't have a lot of space, i have a lot of things in pots....tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, greenbeans (they are in the ground) and cucumbers, even a few melon vines, we'll see if they pan out.....i've been meaning to buy a farm...LOL...sure would like to have more space, i am running out of room......of course i'd use every bit of it, or die trying...LOL! K gotta run but i am going to try to be on here more often! Thanks for missing me, you know who you are! deb
Hi all, hope everyone is doing well. Been very very busy, and just have not had time to sit down and blog too much....Been doing the market almost every Saturday, plus i work a full-time job during the week....i must be crazy! LOL! It's raining in Marietta, GA today which gives me a chance to catch up on a lot of inside stuff....including sitting down and talking to everyone! Figs are coming in, my neighbor lets me snitch gallons....they don't eat too many of them....so i made Fresh Fig Cookies....yum! I had to make more, because i could not stop eating them as i was baking them...LOL....anyhow those went over really well yesterday at market!! Gonna try for fig cake this week, and apple cake too, a friend of mine has two apple trees and has given me some of the bounty! Anybody got a good recipe they'd like to share for either one of those? (fig or apple cake) I know i can find one online or in one of my many cookbooks....just thought someone might have an out of this world recipe! Email me if you do, or post it here.
I hope everyone is having a fabulous 2009 gardening season....i finally have a few good veggie plants going....my soil is not the best, due to the pecan trees, and i have to constantly amend....i think i finally amended enough this time...LOL. Well on to other things.....oh FYI all locals: The Marietta City Council recently voted to extend the Marietta Square farmer's market through December! Wowee!

i CAN'T BELIEVE it has been over a month since I wrote, but it has! Been busy busy busy with farmer's market and other things. We had another cloudy day today in Marietta, but no rain fell on the market! It was a beautiful day out there, lots of folks swarming in for their fresh veggies and herbs! I am glad to be a part of the market, it is a wonderful social event every week, and i enjoy helping people with learning to grow their herbs and such. Of course, more often than not, I learn something from them, too! I Just came in from working on transplanting some Japanese Wild Parsley, which has a slightly carroty flavor. Very interesting herb, if you see it you should try some! And a Hearty Thanks to all who come out to the Marietta Square Farmer's Market on Saturdays, you are what keeps us going! I heard a rumour they may extend the market into the fall, possibly through November! Wow! Hope they do....well have a great week, i'm off to plow and plant...! debbie

Opening day at our local Marietta Square Farmer's Market was yesterday (Sat). Considering the weather was threatening (it held off, thank God) and there were over 60 market vendors, and we were also competing with the Arts & Crafts event, I did well! I sold a lot of herbs, and some of those pecans from the fall, too! Several people stopped by to say hey that had emailed me. All in all it was a great market day! Now I've been busy since then, in between thunderstorms, potting up various mints (orange, pineapple, apple, spearmint and curled spearmint, lemon mint and peppermint) for all the folks who love love love mint!! And started some more basil, as i am getting low already. Ordered some new varieties to try today, too, one called blue spicy basil and then purple ruffles, cinnamon basil, and a few others i can't remember. I like to have several varieties available. Also some lemon thyme, i have lots of folks ask for it so i ordered a couple of seed packs for that. Thyme grows well from seed. Well I'd better call it a night, hope you all had a great weekend and that next week the sun shines on us all! Happy Gardening!!
I seem to have not had time lately to blog! Getting ready for the Farmer's Market, which opens this weekend in Marietta, GA....Saturday, May 2, 9am to 12noon. I will be there with bells on.....well, at least with herbs! Hope to see you locals there, it will be great! Opening day is always exciting, as the vendors get to see each other, and you, after a long absence! I enjoy the social aspect as much as the actual making money! For anyone coming, they are having the Arts & Crafts festival, too, so look for the Farmer's Market on the Mill St. end, down by the coffee shop and the railroad tracks! That is where they put us when there's something else going on. Can't wait to see you! HAVE AN HERBY DAY!! debbie

Finally a nice, sunny day, and relatively warm....temps are getting back up into the seventies. I might make it after all! Moved the plants back out of the greenhouse this morning, i know they were glad....back into the OPEN AIR. I am planning to plant my beans tomorrow on Good Friday, and hopefully some cukes and more squash. Had a couple of things get burned from the frost the other night, but not too many things since i was prepared. I just forgot to cover some things, and a few got zapped! Oh well can't win them all! I can't wait to be outside in the sunshine for a full day tomorrow, and the whole weekend is supposed to be nice. Yeehaw! If i don't get back on for a few days, everyone have a Happy and Safe Easter! deb

brrrr greenhouse
It is currently 52 degrees in Marietta, GA as i write this blog. However, it will supposedly be going down to below freezing tonite and tomorrow night!! Have to go cover the squash with frost cloth this evening, and bring the tomatoes and peppers (in pots) back into the greenhouse...i put everything else that needed protection in yesterday afternoon. What a chore that was! Can warm weather just come and stay? I saw my first hummingbird Saturday afternoon, flitting around the baskets of impatiens....which reminds me i need to bring those in, too, i guess! Guess i will hunker down for the next few days and stay warm....knowing that by Good Friday it will be in the seventies again! Everyone have a blessed day! debbie
