It's June already and half-gone to boot. I can't believe I forgot to write. All this sun has gone straight to my head and caused hallucinations. I'm actually beginning to believe my gardens look good. All I can say is that people (often complete strangers) are stopping and staring. Maybe it's the plants, maybe it's the unusual rain dance performance that's become the evening ritual on our front porch. Hard to say, but it's not resulting in any rain.
Well, the half-dead garden club (aka Five Seasons GC) called me this morning. Since I haven't heard from them for over a year, I'm certain they have missed dessert. The plants are not what attracts them ~ it's the gossip and homemade ice cream. When I first moved to Kentucky, I was excited to learn about a local county garden club. Since I assumed I moved here from Wisconsin, I am surprised to learn that it may as well have been Mars. I actually expected a garden club to be about .... um, well ......... gardens. (Pause here to spray screen with beverage of choice directly from your nose.) The garden conversation consists of "he said, she said" (and I don't know any of the hes or shes, being new). The garden activities consist of one annual plant sale, and a monthly race to the dessert table. So, this poses the question ~ do I go back and give them another try, or continue to dig plants up off the side of the road? Listen, this is serious ~ NO ONE wants to talk to me about plants anymore. Can we say "coma"? My friends, spouse, and co-workers only hear a low throbbing hum when I start in on, well ~ YOU know. OK - let's have some input here: Do I go to the next GC meeting (Tuesday evening) or do I just give them up for chocolate and sugar junkies? If you talk me into going to the meeting, I'll be sure to report here. To be fair, some of the members of the club have unbelievably awesome (like BH&G) gardens, too incredible to describe.
Today, I moved plants (oh, wait ~ I do that every day), mulched, and gave a whole bed entirely over to northern sea oats (alright, already ~ Paul James the Gardener Guy was right, it does spread). I did a search and destroy for Japanese Beetles (they have ruined my attraction to irridescent green). And I moved my watering device 287 times. Heading out to do 288!
