Tag: Seed Collecting
I just started collecting seeds - just about a week ago. It's my new hobby in the garden, to look for any new seed. It all started when I was checking on my purple patio plant (not sure what the name of this plant is) when I saw a seed pod that had burst open on my purple/yellow/white pansy drooping into the patio plant. So I've been reading up on all the seeds I could possibly have in my garden! Today I was thrilled when I noticed my Sweet William had a few open pods! To store the seeds, I've taken plain computer paper, fold and seal 3 sides to make an open envelope, and label the front with the name of the plant (common only, not the Latin, as I don't know those yet!!). These will store in my garage, or a dark, cool closet that gets decent air flow. The next step will be to see if I can get these little guys to grow :) I don't have the room or the need to grow all these little guys myself, so I would love to share! My garden doesn't have too many exotic or out of the norm plants, but it's so wonderful to have my own seeds!
Here's a list of the seeds I have so far:
- Snapdragon (blooms orange/pink)
- Sweet William
- Morning Glory (mixed)
- Datura/Angel's Trumpet (blooms white)
- Johnny Jump-ups
- Petunia (white)
- Pansies - blueish purple, yellow, white/purple/yellow (I'll list the names that were on the packets of the parent plants), I wonder if they will not bloom the same as the parent plants too.
- Fleabane/Santa Barbara Daisy (not sure on the exact name of this plant)
- White Cyclamen
I do have to add a funny story to this - 2 or 3 years ago my spider plant sent out seed pods. I didn't know anything about gardening, so I threw them all into 2 four inch pots. Nothing happened, right away anyway. Several weeks later I had over 100 of these spider plant babies! I still have about 60 of them, ready for a new home. I'm having a garage sale soon so maybe I can sell them, or even give them away!
