In Sept., I ask you guys if you had ever heard of a Resurrection Plant. I decided to order one. It came today. I'm going to take some photos of it's development. It was advertised as a plant that can survive without light or water for up to 50 years. Yeah, I know!!! :):) It comes as a dormant brown ball and in just 3 hours turns into a lush fern. Yeah, I know :):):) It has a little bag of rocks (they call it Lava Rocks from New Mexico) and at 9:00 I rinsed , the rocks and plant ball put into the water! Ta-dummm!!!! Now we wait!

I have a question about compost. I know this is the time to start a compost pile or heap, or whatever you call it, but my husband says it will cause rats. Could this be true? We have a neighbor, separated only by a privacy fence, that has a garage. It's the type that has old junked and abandoned cars and he has rats. We've had to treat our side and tallked with him about how he could help without saying, 'its your fault'. He has 2 "junk yard dogs" that have food out all the time, as well. But if the compost is chicken crap or manure, surely they don't eat that. Or if you mix dirt in with everything, how could they eat it? But my husband says they eat anything! I'd like to hear any thoughts you have on this crappy subject......;) At times we have a battle controlling these pests, so I don't want to start them up again. Hilda

Can I use the seeds from my peppers to plant next year? They are those peppers that look like banana peppers, but taste like bell pepper. I just cut some up, and was saving the seeds. Then I rememebered that on the flowers you have to let them die and wither on the plant before the seeds are good. Is that right?( Some one told me about "deadheading" and I've been scavenging everything LOL LOL ) Do I need to let a few peppers just die on the bush? I know this is an easy one for some of you beginners-turned-pro!!! Thanks.....Hilda

I got this idea from one of our GG friends (can't remember who posted it) But this is my version. I thought their photo was so neat! Mine, not so....it sorta looks like pots just stacked up! LOL LOL They had voiced their concern about watering; not a problem. Easy! But keeping the pots from tipping over ,even with the rebar through them, was difficult. I used a plastic one on the bottom, (shouldn't have) and clay for the top ones. The clay was so heavy, it wanted to tip them all over, so I used only 2 small pots
Anyway, here they are.......Hilda

Just curious....anyone ever heard of a Resurrection Plant? My husband spotted it in the newspaper sales insert. Its $9.97 plus $4.95 shipping. It says "from a dormant brown ball to a lush fern in just 3 hours." Also," it can survive without water or light, it just goes dormant - it doesn't die." It says "no soil, no mess, you plant it in real lava rocks (included)" Sounds kinda interesting, doesn't it? If anyone has purchased one, let me know what you think. My husband says I should get one, but I'm usually suspicious of anything that sounds too good to be true. Thanks, Hilda

Tag: Can you freeze peppers?
Can I freeze these peppers? They are small peppers,. I just hate to waste them. They remind me of Bell Pepper, only smaller.

Tag: Peace Lily Bulbs
Early this summer, I had a Peace Lily; when it died down. I put it in the ground. Of course it never looked good again. Today I was breaking off the stems and saw this little cluster of buds, or bulbs around the base of the stem. I'm assuming they're bulbs. I was so excited! Now, how do I keep them for next year? Do I leave them alone or separate them, or put them deeper into the ground? They are right on top of the ground. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'm going to add a photo tomorrow. Thanks. Hilda

Tag: Catching rain for the plants
My little plants had been begging for water, now they have it! It has rained for about 3 days! I put out 5 gal. buckets to catch what I could and I'm so glad I did! I have ,perhaps, 7 buckets to the top in rain water! I placed the buckets under gutters and places where there was run off. If you remember, we've been living with this water shortage here, so I'm happy! But now I have to worry about grass cutting. The grass already looks greener, but in a day or two, it'll be waving at me! My husband & I cut about 3 properties. I'm wanting to cut back on all that work. Oh well.

I'm brand new to the world of gardening: just started this year. I retired at the beginning of 2008 and by the time summer rolled around, I thought "gardening sounds fun" :):):) Well, it actually is, at times! But I've so much to learn. For example, I'm afraid I've killed my melon and squash plants by not knowing that there was mildew on them. I thought that the drought and heat was the culprit, until I started reading from this site. So, I'm using the baking soda mixture AND the milk mixture that I read about. But I'm afraid the damage has been done! And anyone that thinks gardening is cheap is dreaming! You can see by the photos that I have a teenie tiny spot and its cost a fortune. Only about half is my fault. like planting too early, and planting in containers (that didn't work for me). But I have got some delicious tomatos! I'm eating tomato sandwiches every day, as well as freezing and giving them away. So all isn't lost! And I've already learned that next time I'll plant far apart and trim off new growth! Oh well, happy gardening everyone!
