After two beautiful days in the 70’s we dip back down to the 30’s tonight and tomorrow we have snow in the forecast. It’s always this time of year, when things hint at spring only to disappoint soon after that I get impatient for the chance to get out and dig in the dirt. Why can’t those wonderful days of 70 land only on the weekends?
I have started the herb seeds and have recently transferred them to their pots that will go out on the deck when real spring comes. They are happily growing under the florescent lights lined up on the counter in the kitchen.
The pond is still a dilemma and now that the fish are warming up and beginning to stir, I am having second thoughts about getting rid of it. First warm weekend we get I think we have agreed to figure out some way to save it, at least until I begin to curse at it again. The tree frogs are waking up and I have enjoyed their songs through the window at night. Do they sleep, burrow or something in the winter?
Lots in the flower beds are peeking up, daffies are blooming and tulips are not far behind. Daylilies are starting to show, salvia and mums are showing a bit a green rising from the mulch. I will go out in the next week or so and get some peas going in the veggie patch. They should be fine no matter what the weather throws at us. (No more ice storms please.)
The golden finches are starting to show the beginnings of their “maillot jaune” for the summer. Have not yet seen the grosbeaks passing through and we are just a month away from the normal first sightings of the ruby throats. I put some of the hair from grooming the dogs out in a suet basket. The wrens are big takers, as are the chickadees. So nesting has begun in full force.
Mr. D and the rest of the bushy tailed beasties are the same as always…a pain. But I must confess to enjoying their antics. During the ice storm I kept throwing seed out on the deck. They came en masse to devour what they could before it was covered with a coating of ice. One little guy became very good at chipping away at the ice to get to the covered seeds. I felt sorry for them out it that mess, whiskers and tails coated in ice.
I am leaving the 30th of March for Arizona, off to fly fishing with the sisters, this is a ladies only trip. Plan to fish till we drop then over eat, drink good wine and enjoy the desert for a few days. I have been counting the days!! Looking forward to this trip for almost a year. Will leave any gardening and yard work to the hubby. Well, I shouldn’t really have much to take care of by then rather I will be ready to get tomatoes and such in when I return. Then it will really be spring, right?
