The New York State Fair opened yesterday. This traditionally suggests summer’s end. However, our flower beds even with the lack of rain refuse to quit. The sunflowers have been exceptionally resilient and their seed heads have provided a playground for the yellow finches.

From the morning cooing of a pair doves until the sundown chirping of the crickets, our patio garden keeps us entertained. Furthermore, this year’s lush growth of butterfly bushes, sunflowers, and tall grasses have provided us with a sense of privacy in which to enjoy our visitors. Plus a bonus, Luca, our family reptile, ensures our time on the patio is bug free.

Our porch gets a great deal of use. This year has been no exception. Our front yard garden has delighted us from our morning coffee and tea until our nightcap. The butterfly bushes and the sunflowers have kept the bees and the butterflies busy as well as entertaining hummingbirds and yellow finches.

Two years ago we planted sunflowers behind the backyard pad to provide us with privacy. The following year sunflowers rose in our front yard. We theorize thanks to the neighborhood birds. This summer sunflowers again adorn the entranceway to the front porch.
Yesterday two yellow finches were checking out the flowerheads. They did not stay long because the seeds are not ready for harvest.
