Chinese Lanterns

Hello all....

    I'm new to this site....

 

Can anyone tell me the care and upkeep of Chinese lanterns,I cant seem to find anyone who knows about this plant. I have tried for years to grow it from seed....One night this summer,while walking past my garden,I saw a flick of red,to my surprise,I had a whole bunch of lanterns growing & blooming! I think just maybe in past years I have weeded these plants out,not knowing what they were?  How do I care for them with a Coinnecticut  winter fast approaching? Do I need to cut them back..?? Please any help will be appricated!
