My First Garden

I have decided to plant a flower in my yard. This would be the first flower/plant that I have ever planted in my life. My hope is that it will grow and at least make it through one summer. Any suggesions for good flowers? I have already been suggested: Astilbe, Ligularia dentata, Perennial Geraniums, Iris, and Day Lilies. As a total newbie gardener (never planted anything in my life) these sound like microscopic organisms or something. I guess I have heard of Iris and Lilies before. Anyone have pics of the other flowers?
