Here in Newstead, Central Victoria we had our first frost this morning. The straw mulch on my northern house garden and the bales of hay insulating the top of the chook pen had a light frost. Seedlings and potted trees in the 'secret garden' survived without frost, probably due to the 90% shadecloth coverings. The 10 week old leghorn chicken "Eva" (currently known as 'Teen Eva' due to her cheeky adolescent behaviours) looked a little stiff getting off the perch this morning. At 7am the temperature was 5 degrees Centigrade. Surprisingly there was no sign of frost on southern side of house where the tyre retaining wall stands with no plant cover at all.
